I gave up on FB and Twitter about a year ago. Deleted both. My only social media accounts are on federated networks.

Facebook's entire operation and most of their revenue comes from their ad-serving, analytics and information-marketing operation, so it is sadly unsurprising to see this move from Facebook.

This move strikes me as being aimed not towards the more computer-savvy users, but rather, with its target being the Average Jane / Joe who does not customize a browser beyond just installing and using it, or just using whichever browser comes bundled with their computer.

The following quote is often attributed to Steve Jobs, but the quote appears to be much older than that, used in different contexts and situations, but I feel that it applies in this specific case (with Facebook being proprietary commercial software and a corporation, whereas I do not feel that this applies to FOSS, just wanted to clarify):

"If you are not paying for the product, you are the product."

-- Unknown

I can not vouch for any of the following, I am not really a social media user, and when I do use them, it is usually under a disposable identity, but I thought I might as well link these here just in case any of you find them useful or interesting:

I haven't had a Facebook account in years. Office 365 has a safelink functionality.
It is used in company environments so they can prevent people from clicking on malicious links and if someones does click on one and it isn't know they can eventually track which user did it and from which computer.

I have a FB account, because it's the only way to keep in contact with family, but I am very careful what I click on and what I say,
FB has been the biggest boon to housebreakers and other thieves in history, especially with FB connect and GPS, I keep telling them to disable these add-ons, but they don't listen, I so often see on their pages, things like Jane has checked in at the XXYY bar in Brighton when their FB profile says they live In Milton Keynes some 2 hrs away by fast train, or George is at Gatwick Airport, and a few hours later George is at Hippocrates airport some 2000 miles away from his home, crooks know they have plenty of time to do their business without rushing.
I know it's not foolproof, but I do use Facebook Container, to reduce the amount of information it can glean from my other web activities.

I started a FB account and deleted it three times just because I hated what people posted, lol. The ads are annoying and useless of course, and spies love FB.

Next month it's gonna be 1 year without Fascistbook for me, so I don't really care about them, LOL
Besides, Fascistbook don't really delete accounts. I know that for a fact and it's easily provable - delete your account and 1-2 months later try to register a new account with the same e-mail as the one you used for the deleted account. Surprise! Fascistbook will say there's already an account with that e-mail.

All just so they can collect information and charge for ads...

My account is deactivated, so I can't login into it, if I tried, so no ads there. But there's probably another way for them to profit from a disabled account, one that we don't know about.

And then there's the metaverse, which is disturbing on so many different levels.

What's a "metaverse" in this context?

Oh, I see. Well, that thing is still way too expensive for me to be able to afford in my country, not to mention the hardware requirements and I'm not willing to basically buy a small car (that's what the price equals in this part of the world), so I won't be virtually tracked anytime soon. Speaking of VR, not long ago I read somewhere an article stating that Suckerberg was gonna force people to login through VR only. Suckerberg's involvement in VR is another reason for me to say "No" to the it, even if it becomes affordable.
