Just trying to figure out how to install this theme, but not getting anywhere. Does anyone know HOW exactly you're supposed to install this?

I'm trying to use the Terminal commands to install it, then use the certain tweaks and color options. Yet no matter what I do, it says: No such file or directory?!

I'm also having NO luck getting new Icons to work. I did exactly like multiple videos and online "how to's" show and yet they never show up. It says to download the icons. Then extract them. Then copy and paste them into a .icon folder you create in your home folder. Did that. It then shows the Icon pack in the .icon folder. But when I go to Gnome Tweaks, they do not show up as an option to chose?! What is going wrong here?

I didn't know it could be SO HARD to do such a simple thing. Linux is very difficult to work with I'm finding out :(

first you have the requirements installed - GTK >=3.20 (libgtk-3-0), gnome-themes-extra, and gtk2-engines-murrine and sassc which you can get through the Synaptic Package Manager which is from https://github.com/vinceliuice/Orchis-theme?tab=readme-ov-file

now you have to extract the source code and end up with a folder called Orchis-theme-2024-05-30

after the requirements are installed you have to open a terminal where the install.sh command which is inside the Orchis-theme-2024-05-30 folder located now right click and select Open Terminal Here once the terminal is open you need to type in
sudo bash ./install.sh
sudo bash ./install.sh -l (Default light version will installed)
sudo bash ./install.sh -c dark -l #(Link dark version)
sudo bash ./install.sh -c dark -t purple -l #(Link dark purple version)

did you read the documentation?

  • GTK >=3.20
  • gnome-themes-extra (or gnome-themes-standard)
  • Murrine engine — The package name depends on the distro.
    • gtk-engine-murrine on Arch Linux
    • gtk-murrine-engine on Fedora
    • gtk2-engine-murrine on openSUSE
    • gtk2-engines-murrine on Debian, Ubuntu, etc.
  • sassc — build dependency

Sorry to hear you're facing such difficulty. I was there once and it's frustrating at times.

If your Ubuntu install already has all of the gtk libraries and etc. that it needs it may be easier to go here to gnome-look and download the theme you want.

Once you download the one you want or like I can show you how to unpack it and move it to where it needs to go so that your Setting MGR in Gnome will see it.

I did read that. It's just that I don't know what all of it means, nor how to install it all.

I did a bunch of googling and still can't figure out what GTK version I have. But I "think" Ubuntu already comes with GTK4, so it says you need 3.2 or higher? So I should be good there.

Then I typed in Terminal: sudo apt install gnome-themes-extra and it says this:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
gnome-themes-extra is already the newest version (3.28-2ubuntu5).
gnome-themes-extra set to manually installed.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

So not 100% sure, but it seems like it might already be installed?

Then I typed in sudo apt install gtk2-engines-murrine and it says:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
gtk2-engines-murrine is already the newest version (0.98.2-4).
gtk2-engines-murrine set to manually installed.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

Again, not sure, but seems installed already?

Then I type in sudo apt install sassc and it says:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
sassc is already the newest version (3.6.1+20201027-2).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

Again, seems installed? But don't know what "build dependency" means?

So I've got the "dependencies" installed or they're already installed. But I really don't know what any of those mean, why I need them or truly how to install them. I feel like almost everything in Ubuntu to install is sudo apt install then the name of the app?

first you have the requirements installed - GTK >=3.20 (libgtk-3-0), gnome-themes-extra, and gtk2-engines-murrine and sassc which you can get through the Synaptic Package Manager which is from https://github.com/vinceliuice/Orchis-theme?tab=readme-ov-file
Ok, so as I stated to Brickwizard, I "think" I have all the requirements installed already. But not sure. Lets just assume I have NO IDEA what I'm doing and need to be told EXACTLY what to do, to install these requirements. What would I do EXACTLY? And then yes, I've been on that github site for the theme for two whole days now messing around and messing around and still can not get the theme to install using the terminal using ./install./sh It always says: No such file or directory. But I DO have the theme downloaded to my downloads folder. I then extracted it to the downloads folder. Then copied it and pasted it into a new .themes folder in my Home folder. And I can install the light or dark Orchis theme or compact theme. But it's not complete and has NO options. Meaning, I can't chose a color, like Vinceliuice's github page shows. It's just all black. And I can't add any of the tweaks that he shows either. And it's always just dark theme, never light theme, even when I chose light theme in the Gnome Tweaks app. It's so strange.

And then I've even tried to use that technique I've seen in a video where the guy uses Github and https clone to install this exact theme. It doesn't work. I type in terminal: sudo apt install git https://github.com/vincelieuice/Orchis-theme.git and this is what it spits out:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package https://github.com/vinceliuice

And again, I don't know what Synaptic Package Manager is, how to use it, download it or what it has to do with this theme. You'll have to explain everything like I have NO IDEA what you're talking about. Because I don't. Here is a shot of the theme running with Light selected:
Screenshot from 2024-09-01 17-49-55.png

now you have to extract the source code and end up with a folder called Orchis-theme-2024-05-30

What does extract the source code mean? How do I do that? Like I said, I already have the Orchis Theme in my .themes folder. But it does not say Orchis-theme-2024-05-30.
Screenshot from 2024-09-01 17-47-55.png

Screenshot from 2024-09-01 17-47-44.png

after the requirements are installed you have to open a terminal where the install.sh command which is inside the Orchis-theme-2024-05-30 folder located now right click and select Open Terminal Here once the terminal is open you need to type in
I don't know how to do what you're asking. I don't have a Orchis-theme-2024-05-30 folder. I have 5 folders, show above. There is nothing in any of them that says install/sh. And I tried right clicking on one of the 5 Orchis Theme folders in my .themes folder (there is Orchis, Orchis Dark, Orchis Dark Compact, Orchis Light and Orchis Light Compact) and it does open a terminal, but not matter what version of ./install.sh I type, It says No such file or directory

This output from your Ubuntu terminal:
Code:
gnome-themes-extra is already the newest version (3.28-2ubuntu5).

Means that the latest gnome themes are already installed so that's good.

And, this:
Code:
gtk2-engines-murrine is already the newest version (0.98.2-4).

Means that your gtk2 engines are the newest too. Done:-

Something is not upgraded though. And I was able to figure that out by seeing this from your terminal.
Code:
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

You already have the build dependency that you need, friend.
Code:
sassc is already the newest version (3.6.1+20201027-2).

So, I know how to download it, extract it and to place it in my .themes folder. I've done that already. But what is not happening is, it's not showing anything but an all black dark theme. No color accents and no tweaks. So it's like half way complete, but not done. I really don't understand how to get this to work, it's crazy hard and the instructions act like you already know a TON of stuff, which I don't.

Ok, well that is good for the first two, but bad for the last one, haha. What do I need to upgrade? How would I even find out? I just ran this command in terminal: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to hopefully upgrade or update EVERYTHING, but it keeps saying there is 1 thing not upgraded or updated. This is what it spit out:

Is it that cloud-init thing? I don't even know what that is and have never even seen it or used it. But not sure if that's even the 1 thing not upgraded or not?

EDIT I found some command that tells you what needs upgraded and ran it, it WAS cloud-init. So I typed in: sudo apt upgrade cloud-init and it updated it!!! Now just have to check and see if that does anything to help this themes problem

Reboot your Ubuntu system.

If you still can't apply the theme after a reboot, I think I know why and have a few ideas.

Yes, cloud-init is the one thing that is not upgraded. You are correct-:)

The cloud-init is a tool for customizing and installing packages.
However, you have to give it instructions to do things.

I personally would not use that as you already have enough going on now since your fresh install of Ubuntu that you like.

So like I said, the theme is half way there. It have Black Compact selected in the Gnome Tweaks app, and the system folders/windows come up as dark theme. But there is no blue highlights like it shows on his github site. Nor can I select any of the tweaks (for example, make the buttons on windows look like macos). So it's only halfway installed. And I have rebooted a ton of times after making all these changes and installing the theme. It doesn't make the ./install.sh commands work

Ok, well that's good that I figured it out. I already upgraded it. And I can't use it, since I don't even know what it is, haha. Thanks for helping this far. Hopefully between the guy that made the theme responding and you helping, we can figure this out. The guy that wrote the theme is sending back answers to my questions like I already know everything and HOW to do anything he's asking me to do, haha. I've told him 3 times now, I have NO IDEA what I'm doing. I'm new to Linux and you're going to have to explain like I have no idea what I'm doing. Be VERY explicit. And he just keeps saying the same things over and over and in sentence structure that is hard to understand and that I don't understand anyways.

Ok, I see from your screenshot that you have 6 different Orchis directory's/folders.

Like our member @GatorsFan said you will need to open the terminal to where the Orchis directory/folder is and be inside of the directory/folder.
The ./install.sh script should be inside that folder.

1. Go to your Orchis folder in your .themes.
2. Right click on that folder and choose "open terminal'" here.

3. Once inside that folder run this command:
Code:
./install.sh

***If that doesn't work------------------------------

Open your terminal and type this and post back what the output is.
Code:
ls -a

Be back in a few-

I downloaded the Orchis theme from Git Hub.

Code:
@debian-box:~/Downloads/Orchis-theme-master$ ls
COPYING gtkrc.sh install.sh README.md src
core.sh images parse-sass.sh release wallpaper
@debian-box:~/Downloads/Orchis-theme-master$

Inside of that Orchis-theme-master directory/folder is the install.sh script. No confusion there as the install.sh exist's.

Did you download the zip file @SuperWookie68?

If you didn't download the zip it's ok. Just go to the Git Hub page and download the zip.
Click on the green box that says 'code' and then click on 'Download zip'.

Zip.png_001.png

Once the zip is downloaded into your Downloads directory, unzip it.
Then open your terminal and cd into that directory.

Code:
cd Downloads

Press Enter
Then at the Downloads prompt type:
Code:
ls
And press Enter. That will show everything in your Downloads directory.

Then what you want to do is make sure you are in the
Orchis-theme-master folder.....like I was in post #15 on my system.

Then lastly type:
Code:
./install.sh

The script should take off and install the theme.

Ok, after many many tries and failures, I finally got it to work! Sort of, haha. It's basically the same as I already had it, but with one small difference.

I was able to open a terminal inside the Orchis theme folder. And it did "install" ALL the color choices for Orchis. But not sure if it works how it should? Seems like some stuff works and other stuff does not.

orchis-theme-default.png

So the first thing I noticed is that I can not get this look, no matter what version or color of Orchis I install in Gnome Tweaks or through the terminal. This black window, but with the white inside. It looks SO great, but mine is just all black no matter what dark theme I chose. And if I chose any light theme, it's just all white. In fact, no matter what color I chose, the ONLY thing that changes color so far, that I can tell is the top right drop down menu. The one in this screen that shows the power, volume and network drop down. It will show things selected as whatever color in Tweaks I have chosen. And It's either a dark or light background, then the color I chose over selected things. But NOTHING else in the entire theme is the color I chose anywhere. It's very strange. Like, if I chose light theme purple, it should look like this:
FiezpHcVEAA8M5p

But instead, it's just all white windows with NO purple accents on anything.

Or if I chose light theme blue, it should show this:
panel3.png

But it doesn't. It's all white. So that's super frustrating and sh*ty.

On top of that, the top left circle button (probably the activities button) shown in the first photo I posted up top, and most other photos of Orchis, does not change either. Instead It just shows the same generic long dash with a dot Gnome/Ubuntu Activities button that it showed since the second I installed Ubuntu. And the other weird thing is, I can barely even find a photo of what it looks like doing a google search?! It's that little long dash and dot above the Ubuntu logo. My Ubuntu 24.04 has that, instead of the word ACTIVITIES, or a circle or the ubuntu logo like EVERY single screen shot I've seen of ubuntu 24.04. This was the only photo I could find that was like mine. And I don't want that. I want the circle like the Orchis theme has. Or at least the Ubuntu logo would be nice. Why is mine still showing the little dash and dot, instead of the Orchis Theme circle? Or how can I change it to the Ubuntu logo or a Circle?
Icono-de-Ubuntu-24.04-en-la-parte-superior.webp

Then on top of that, the MacOS buttons tweak does not work. I opened the terminal inside the folder, typed in the exact command as the guy that makes the theme states to do (./install/sh --tweaks macos), and it "shows" it installing it in the terminal, but then it's not present on any window of any app at all in my computer?!

I have Gnome Tweaks installed use it. I have Gnome Extensions installed and use it. I don't know why this is SO difficult?! It's maddening.

And then, the other thing that is super annoying is the Dash to Dock Gnome Extension. I have installed and then started over (I took a Timeshift shot of my system after I installed everything I needed and wanted, but before I started adding the theme. So that in case something went wrong with adding the theme, I could just restore to that point and start over. And I have done that 2-3 times now, because of things not working or not working completely).

And in that, every time I have done everything over with the theme, things are changing!?!? On their own! So two out of the three times, the dock has been this weird super rounded edged dock shape, while one time it looked normal. Here is what it looks like when it's got this weird round edges that I don't want:
custom-gnomeshelltheme.jpg

And here is what it looked like one time, and how I DO want it to look:
maxresdefault.jpg

And the craziest thing is, I never ONCE did anything different when downloading or turning on Dash to Dock!?!?! And yet it's changed the look of it on it's own?!?! So that is another question, HOW do I get it to look more like the second photo? With the sides having straight lines, but just rounded corners. I don't want circular sides.

I get that it's maddening and I've been there with some Linux distros, many times.

Try going into your Settings Manager and see if things can be changed to more of what you want. If that doesn't play out well for you then, .......
try going to gnome-look directly and choose a theme that you can have control over.

When I ran the Gnome desktop this is how I would have control over things.
Here's the link:

I download the theme unpack it and move it to either /usr/share/icons or /usr/share/themes.

Sounds like your are experiencing instability somehow. And if I am mistaken then it's something in the Settings that could be selected or not.

One way to get it to look like the second photo is to manipulate the circular sides in a program like GIMP or Krita.

There are a few websites that I trust for a desktop background wallpaper.
Perhaps you could download a wallpaper of your choice and design it the way you'd like?

Last ideas that I have in trying to assist you.

Find out if this issue is with Gnome itself being controlled by Wayland and tend to that. Also, have a look around in the Ubuntu Forums and see if any of the members there have a fix for what you have going on.
They were helpful to me in the past when I was running Ubuntu.

Cheers,
Alex
