I have run a number of commands to try and solve this problem but to no avail. Please see attached file which also contains a print out of all error messages in dmesg.

Did sdb Not appear or just sdb2?
First I get a libparted warning: Error fsyncing/closing /dev/sdb: Input/output error.

Input/output error during read on /dev/sdb

When I first ran gparted sdb2 did not appear, only sdb1.

So intern.
Test it while it is connected to the energy

I have been plugged in to a wall unit for all test:
mdadm: No md superblock detected on /dev/sdb2.

What other tests do you recommend ?

G'day @milford151 and welcome to linux.org :)

1. Is this a new laptop or a used laptop? Can you tell us the Brand name and the Model Number?

I am betting you have a SATA HDD which is /dev/sda, possibly from 500 GB to 2 TB, and that /dev/sdb is a solid state drive (SSD) maybe 128 GB to 256 GB.

How am I doing so far? :D

Code:
mdadm: No md superblock detected on /dev/sdb2

mdadm is a command for use with RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) drive setup, and unless it has been already setup this way, will not apply to you and the command is of no relevance.

2. What Linux Distribution (Distro) are you using, Bill? eg Ubuntu, Linux Mint, &c and the version number?

3. Do you have Windows on this laptop and if so, which version?

Cheers
