Solved Can anyone recommend an old laptop?

Solved issue
I'm lucky I landed on this one first then!

I'm looking forward to getting started once the new laptop arrives :)
We shall be here. We'll see what we can do to advise, and try to help make the transition as painless as possible...

My old HP Pavilion 2015 (Windows 10) laptop is on its last legs, and I'm worried it's going to break soon and leave me stuck. For a while now I've been thinking of getting Linux as my next OS, as I hate Windows with a passion and I don't want Windows 11. I've avoided the idea of getting a new laptop for a while because (aside from the fact I'm on an Extreme budget) there are certain things I don't like about new laptops. First and foremost, I use an ethernet cable, and new laptops don't seem to have the socket anymore. I also want a CD drive. And I just generally don't like all the bells and whistles AI smart crap that new tech seems to be loaded up with now. Basically, I'm a luddite, and I just want a basic machine that allows me to do what I need to do as simply as possible.

So that said, I'm sitting here looking at refurbished laptops, with the thought of running it with Linux Mint (because it looks the easiest - correct me if I'm wrong!). But I have No Idea what I'm looking at. I understand I need at least 4GB, but beyond that I don't know what I need. I currently use my laptop for managing my small Folsky shop, organising stock photos, for word processing and spreadsheets, and generally getting online. I don't do gaming or anything like that.

I'm seeing laptops with Mint and Ubuntu pre-installed - is that better than getting one with a different OS and installing Linux myself?

There are so many to choose from - can anyone recommend a specific brand or model? Also, there are a lot of sites selling refurbished laptops - can anyone recommend a trustworthy seller? I'm in the UK.

Any and all pointers appreciated!

if you're up for it, plug your laptop's serial number in to https://partsurfer.hp.com/ and then look on ebay to see if there are parts available - cpu/fan/ram/ssd/etc. repairing a laptop can be tricky though - some models are easier to disassemble than others.

if you go the replacement computer route instead, I have had good luck with refurbished lenovo thinkpads - my hp 9480m died last summer so I replaced it with a refurbished lenovo t470, cost around $150 or so (I had looked at a few thift stores/2nd hand shops in the area but didnt see anything I liked so I used amazon instead).

Well, the new laptop arrived... and on the very same day my old one seems to have broken. I've dragged my old barely-working smartphone out of retirement to get online. This wasn't the plan! I was hoping to set the new one up in a relaxed fashion, calmly learning as I go! Now I'm not sure what to do. I was going to do a clean install and delete the Windows. Now I'm wondering whether it would be better to have it alongside Windows until I learn what I'm doing. I was in the middle of my tax return too, really inconvenient timing!

I'm thinking Mint Cinnamon is what I'm going to go for.

Mint is good , I prefer Mint LMDE runs perfection this 5490

@theLegionWithin
Kindly read the compleat thread before commenting, you will have found the OP has got a replacement fan for her HP but not got round to swapping it out, also that she has decided to buy [and has now received] a refurbished Dell 5490

Oh, and yes until you're fully happy using Linux you can install alongside windows in a duel boot system

Modern Linux isn't all that complicated - unless you want it to be.

I'd bite the bullet and just install your distro of choice, kicking Windows to the curb.

(After checking the live environment to make sure your hardware works properly.)

I've managed to get the old one working again for the moment, thank goodness, and retrieve what I was working on earlier. It's overheating I think.

I can't seem to get online with the new laptop using my ethernet cable, so I'm going to get a cat5 or cat6 as mentioned earlier in the thread. I just hope it works with this extension I use, as I don't want to have to buy a new one of those as well.

A range extender, you will still need a patch lead to go from the output of the router to one extender, and another to connect the second extender to the laptop, if they are short runs you can use whatever Ethernet cables you have you may have ,
if you have wi-fi then there should not be a problem as standard this modal has an intel wi-fi and the drivers are in the kernel, have you installed Linux yet or just trying it?

I don't have wifi where I use my laptop - it's in a garden cabin a long way from the router. I've found these range extenders have worked very well to solve the problem. The first one is plugged in next to the router, and the other is next to where my laptop is outside. Both have short ethernet cables.

I've run the troubleshooter and am getting 'Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration'. And 'unidentified network - no internet'. I'm googling, and there seems to be a couple of things I can try. But I'll leave that till tomorrow I think. Maybe it's a Microsoft problem, and won't be an issue when I download Linux? I haven't got that far yet. It's Friday the 13th after all, so it's also waiting for tomorrow!

But I'll leave that till tomorrow I think.
yes it must be getting cold in your neck of the woods, have a Dalclagie and pop off to bed till tomorrow, apart from shopping mid morning I should be around all day

Ok, first daft question of the day...

Using my old laptop (which seems to be working today!), I've downloaded Mint Cinnamon, done the integrity and authenticity checks (all ok), and put it onto a USB stick using Etcher.

I've booted into it (sorry if I'm using the wrong terms for things like this!) on the new laptop, but before starting the install I'd like to get my internet connection sorted so I can do the multimedia codecs bit. It still won't connect using the cable, so I've moved into the house to use the wifi. But there is no option for wifi under the internet connection menu in the bottom right corner. I've got 'wired', but no 'wireless' option. I think this is a driver problem? ... which I need an internet connection to fix...

Unless it's not a driver problem, and I'm missing something obvious? I'm going to try again with the wire...

ok so you have Mint on a pen drive, boot it up to test mode, open a terminal [black box bottom left with $_ on it] and type in
inxi -Nn
and enter you should get something like this.. [as its the same model as mine it should be the same]

Right, it's installed and running on the new laptop. I got online using the router ethernet cable. I've tried looking in the Driver Manager for wifi drivers, but it just says I don't need any drivers and nothing comes up.

ok then run inxi -Fnx and copy.paste back the result

Ok, I'll do that in a minute. I'm typing from my old laptop, the new one's doing an update now. I haven't been online with it yet (think I need to download a browser first?), so need to work that out before I can copy/paste anything here.

The browser is Firefox, the link is normally on the bottom left panel and is orange with a u shape in it.

if not open mint menu [lm far bottom left] look for internet click on and select Firefox
