I'm having issues getting a refurbished Brother printer to work. On Amazon it stated it was Linux compatible, I just finished a chat with the Brother techs and they said they offer no chat/telephone support for Linux. Someone was blowing smoke.

My system is:

Probably too much info there.

I'm trying to get a Brother MFC-J4335DW to work.
Error message I get is:
Waiting for printer to become available. (It's been waiting for 3 days)

I've installed drivers multiple times, rebooted printer & computer and error message continues.

Any ideas/help would be awesome. Otherwise it goes back to Amazon so they can sell it again.
What is a good Linux compatible printer?

Thank You

How are you connected? W-Fi? Cable Network? USB cable? Normally you don't have to do this with newer printers, but
I did have an HP, that I had to "wake up" before I could print to it. It was already turned on, but asleep, I had
to press the power button, for it to go online for some reason.

not an easy one to download and install .deb packages from below, scanner will normally be done with simple scan [already installed in Mint

Thanks, but same outcome...Waiting for printer to be made available.
The driver I had used previously (mfcj4335dwpdrv-3.5.0-1.i386.deb) had same results. Computer recgnizes the printer and all. I just get that message. 3 days should be a long enough wait wouldn't you think?

USB connection. I've installed/uninstalled .deb package more times than I'm years old, and that's quite a lot.

Remove usb connector from computer
Install drivers [if you haven't already]
re-boot computer, when you get the Mint desktop connect printer and turn on
go to menu--- all applications and scroll down to printers, click on and open,
if it dosent show the brother printer click on add and follow instructions, when finished it should show the printer [does it have a green tick ] if not right-click on the printer and select enable and enter

I'll give that a shot (can't hurt) Will let you know when I get back from dialysis, And Thank You.

Same results, waiting on printer to become available.
Later when I have a bit more free time I'll try it again, but this time I'll uninstall what I have installed on printer. Reboot computer. Install the .deb package. Reboot computer again, and see if that makes a difference. Thanks Again Brickwizard

Everything indicates all is installed:
ii brmfcfaxdrv 2.0.2-1 amd64 Brother Fax share driver
ii brscan-skey 0.3.2-0 amd64 Brother Linux scanner S-KEY tool
ii brscan5 1.3.5-0 amd64 Brother Scanner Driver brscan5
ii mfcj4335dwpdrv:i386 3.5.0-1 i386 Brother Printer Driver
ii printer-driver-brlaser 6-3 amd64 printer driver for (some) Brother laser printers
ii printer-driver-ptouch 1.6-2build1 amd64 printer driver Brother P-touch label printers

But it's still says waiting for printer to become available.

Any thoughts

This really shouldn't be this hard. I have a Dell like you. ( a different model )
I have a brother laser printer like you. ( a different model )

I didn't need to download any 3rd party drivers. I just used the brother laser printer driver that came with my distro, and it just works, prints on demand, scans on demand. No special setup, no pre-staging the printer.

If you look on the printer screen below, it says "accepting jobs", and it does.

when you open the printer settings, does it show your printer with a green tick against it? if yes, try un plugging usb at the computer, close down the driver manager, and plug the printer into a different USB port, [this often works]
another thought is check the cable connections at both ends,

My daughters' brother printer connected and installed package drivers first time so i am a little flummoxed

Even the scanner, just works.

I have the green tick. What I'm going to do is get a new USB cable from Amazon, Once it arrives, I'll be back. Half brain dead from working on this, the other half of being brain dead is a natural occurance.

I uninstalled anything I could find dealing with brother, Still waiting on USB cable though..Tuesday. I have noticed in the Driver Manager there was no reference to Printer Drivers (That was before I went nuts uninstalling) I'm thinking maybe it's being installed in the wrong location? Is that possible? Thanks again.

Okay, I'm certain the problem is my fault.
Starting at the beginning, this is the file name: linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.4-1.gz

Installed in my home directory

To unzip the .gz file I used this command:

gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.4-1.gz

for the bash command I used the following:

bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.4-1 MFC-J4335DW

I press y when asked, this is what I get:

y: command not found

Where am I messing up?

Did you download the .Deb package?
on mint download .Deb package, find the file and right click, select open with Deb installer and it should do it all for you

I did the .deb
I too thought it should be a walk in the park (Must have been Central Park as it's wicked bad.

Did you get yours from brother.com or elsewhere?

This is where I started my nightmare:

Cant remember either Brother UK or Brother industries Japan
I got the driver from brother UK, it installed and all, still getting Processing - Waiting for printer to become available. And nothing shows in the Driver manager.

Okay, the new USB cable made no difference so I'm going to run this past everyone (I'm getting desperate)

I realize Linux has no equivalent of a cache, but how do I go about removing any trace of previous install attempts? I'm thinking that I've tried so many times that there are possibly remnants of each failed attempt. Does that sound logical? If not, any other straws I can grasp at? I think Brother support pretty much kicked me to the curb annoying them, they stopped answering my support tickets.
Thanks,
Larry
