Help! I am trying to turn a old windows into linux. I am able to get onto it from the boot screen usb drive storage only. but if i try to just turn the laptop on i get a black screen with a white small line. I believe its something to do with partitions. Sorry for the newb question. i have tried to delete and reinstall multiple times but nothing works. any advise appreciated thank you

Have you 'burned' a Linux distro to a usb stick?.....if so which distro ?
How did you go about doing that ?....where did you download from ? Did you verify the download?
What make and model of Laptop....ram, hdd, all specs.......which version of windows has it been running?
Did you disable fast boot?....Turn off secure boot ?
I dont mean to be antagonistic......it will be helpful if you just work your way through those few question for us.
Just keep talking....we will get you over the line !
