Best Linux OS for light/medium gaming?

Hey guys!

I am looking for a good Linux OS that I can use on my laptop to play some of my favorite games like Minecraft and some Steam games. I have Windows 8 at the moment but some of my games that I play lag a bunch.

Is there any good lightweight and popular Linux distros for gaming or is it kinda pointless?

Until recently games=Windows games=NOT Linux, but, particularly with the advent of Steam for Linux there are more and more games available.

You might want to look at SteamOS itself (based on Debian) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SteamOS or something like Ultimate Edition Gamers (I think based on Ubuntu) - http://ultimateedition.info/ultimate-edition/ultimate-edition-gamers/

Do you know that you don't have to have Windows OR Linux. You can have Windows AND Linux with dual-booting - http://ultimateedition.info/ultimate-edition/ultimate-edition-gamers/

Just watch out if you laptop has a Recovery Partition. You don;t want Linux to wipe that away. If you can, make that into an installable CD.

Ah ok cool.

I heard about Steam OS, but on another forums I'm on, they gave it bad reviews because its quite buggy.

This Ultimate Edition Gamers OS sounds pretty cool. I'll try it in VirtualBox first to see if I like it.

And the recovery partition got wiped long ago, and my recovery disks are broken but its no biggie now anyway.

I was also looking at the Linux Mint 17 Kfce OS, will that be good on an Advent Monza V100?

Linux Mint can be run as a LiveCD without installation, so the short answer is to try that , and see if it works...

Steam OS is not quite ready for average Joe to use it yet. But for the most part is very reliable. I know the developer of Ultimate Edition and I beleive he created an updated version. (Yes it is based on Ubuntu)
