Can anyone suggest any 'must have apps'. My distro is pretty much bare

I have been adding as needed but much prefer having them already there!

PDF editor: PDF Studio ? (Have not used but respect the author)
    http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/opensource/editing-pdfs-in-linux-made-possible-with-pdf-studio/2388

Some of what I use (but suggest getting to know how to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file if applicable):

    mousepad -- good notepad alternative
    xfburn -- basic burner
    xarchiver
    pcmanfm -- file manager
    galculator
    gimp -- image manipulation!
    shutter -- screenshots
    VLC
abiword -- word processer (uses PDF)
    midori -- browser

    Hope this helps !
