I had this setup and ran it on ssd and it was flawless.
I don't stick with the same OS for too long just so I can explore other options and figure out alternative ways to run this PI. so far I like the latest OS a mimic of cinnamon mint.

Have you try TwisterOS? So far I think TwisterOS are more stable, I maybe wrong. I like it, because it got everything in it, retropie already preinstalled and few others.
I used it a couple months back but then after trying out other Linux OS on the PI I just recently went back because it's literally one of the best creations so far.
