Worked with *IX support from early 1980s until end of 1990s. Did also some driver writing, my first was a port of the first 3com ethernet driver for xenix using the multibus card. Ported it later to an Intel computer running UNIX SysV and multibus II with adapter for the old multibus..

Driver writing is a pain. My company had purchased a used 'industrial' plotter - one that took 4' wide paper - and the goal was to update it to work with (I think it was) Windows 98. The secondary goal was to make it so that multiple computers could be connected to it at the same time while in a separate location. One of the biggest hurdles was that the OEM had also used serial cables but used non-standard pins.

That took a while but wasn't impossible or anything.
