autoclean deletes everything

I try to stay away from apt-get autoclean because everytime I use it it deletes a ton of things. Things that should not be deleted like ping and vim. Does anyone else have this issue? I tend to not use it because of this.

It should not remove the current package. It should remove the old package if you have updated/upgraded.

E.g. it should not remove the current ping. But if you have updated/upgraded you should have two packages, the current one and the old one. It should only remove the old one.
