apt-get install is not working...

I am new to Linux. i am trying to install OpenAL
by using this command apt-get install libopenal-dev
but it throws this error message
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

when I try to update software packages using command apt-get update I got the same error.
what can I do to correct this error?

Don't worry, most of us have problems like that from time to time. When you hit a problem and the answer is staring straight at you and you don't even realise! And then when you do, you kick yourself! Heh heh!

I'm the OP in that thread. Nobody else posted anything for a while, but it took me months to work out how to fix the problem and the answer was there the whole time!
