Hi
I'm new to Linux actually I'm transitioning to Linux for life. I've installed ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my retro PC it won't work smoothly without graphics drivers. The thing is that I can't find them online. this PC used to have Windows XP and I mainly used it to play my old retro console games (nes, snes, mega drive etc.) on my CRT TV but the Windows Xp got corrupted and I can't install XP on it again! so here I am at a loss I though linux could save this.

Ubuntu 12, wow. Any reason not to go with a recent release? 24.10?

It isn't Ubuntu, but it has a 32-bit version, and it supports older AMD/ATi video cards.

Just a note here that will hopefully help future readers:

Do not use an old and unsupported OS, even if you have a 32 bit machine and the OS you want has stopped making 32 bit releases.

There is an exception. If the computer is not online (ideally, not even on your network) then you can install any OS you'd like.

Installing an unsupported release means you're not going to get updates. Those updates are often security updates. (Yes, Linux has security issues just like Windows.) Using an old OS means you'll possibly end up being used as a spam relay, bot network, DDoS node, etc...

I'm fond of the term 'netizen'. We should all strive to be good netizens, and that means doing our best to not be a bad actor (intended or not).

well I was never going to connect this machine to the internet in the first place, it will most likely continue to serve as my retro PC if I manage to install graphics drivers for it

B2B...what is the make and full model number of the machine?
Asus P4P800s-x
512mb of ram
Intel Celeron-D 2.5 Ghz

the thing is I can't install Windows Xp on this machine with a USB flash drive even though the machine if fully compatible with Windows Xp. I don't mind using an old version of linux because it will serve as an offline retro Pc running console emulators

OK so you only have a single core Celeron [entry level ]CPU from 2003 with just 512 mb of ram, It's never going to be quick,so i will make one suggestion only [and I don't normally recommend this distro to newbies]
First try 64 bit puppy [your CPU has 64 bit architecture] if that doesn't work try Puppy 32 bit

I did install antix, it was way too laggy to be usable
Then you're out of options, I'm afraid.

First try 64 bit puppy [your CPU has 64 bit architecture] if that doesn't work try Puppy 32 bit
But it has to be an ancient version of Puppy. Newer versions won't work better than antiX. You could also try Porteus 4 LXDE, but I'm not sure if it's gonna work.

I actually found Linux drivers for this ATI 9250 (old trash) at helpdrivers.come here's the link. however I can't install it on any distribution new or old, I tried Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 8 and modern Q4os I get an error like this:

I type this in the terminal to initialize the installation:
sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.28.8.run

detected configuration:
architecture: i686 (32bit)
X Server: unable to detect
removing temporary directory: fglx-install

I even tried it with sudo su

should I make a new thread for this error?

I will call the kennel master to see if he can make further suggestions [it may take a day or so]

@MikeWalsh any advice please buddy.

I was thinking about upgrading this to a Pentium 4 with 2gb of ram to be used as an Xp retro machine, since I can't get Windows Xp to work on this I have to use Linux, I wouldn't mind installing an old Os on this at all as far as I can install the software I want on it. I found the graphics drivers Ubuntu 12 or 8 both work smoothly but without graphics drivers it won't run the software I want

The Socket 478 only takes single core cpu's usually at around 26 w the option would be a single core with hyperthreading,
Mobile Pentium 4 RK80532HE083512, but there is a big jump in power to around 88w and extra heat associated with it
