Hey y'all!

I recently started using OBS but I find it very difficult to run on Linux (being a n00b). I don't know why but once I start OBS I almost lose all my internet connection even tho I'm only running YouTube on my Firefox browser so there's no point in using it. I'm scared to even try gaming with it. Anyone know what that's all about?

Hello and welcome to forums!
I use OBS for recording videos but not for streaming.

When you start OBS for first time it will ask you how do you want to use it, for streaming or recording, which will preconfigure some settings for specific use, which option did you choose?

For streaming you'll also need solid hardware and internet connection, it might help if you share your system info with inxi, if you have no inxi installed install it with:

Bash:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install inxi

Then share output of:
Bash:
inxi -Fzxx

Please also share your internet speed, open up private browser window then close down all programs including non private browser and in private browser go to: https://www.speedtest.net/

Run the test and post screenshot of the result, only portion which shows UP\DOWN speeds and latency.

I use it frequently. More so for post than live these days, but I still use it most every day.

sudo pacman -S obs-studio

NOTE: If you want to be able to integrate stream chat and events n such, use yay to download obs-studio-browser with yay -S obs-studio-browser

If you're streaming, (this is universal regardless of distro), you'll link OBS with your stream key and it'll auto-detect "best" settings, apply.

If you want to add your live stream's chat/events/notifications ect you'll need to get the URL to each function respectively and then add a new dock for each function by pasting the urls into the dock settings upon adding them. Then you can place them wherever you like within the OBS interface.

Set up hot-keys to your liking.

Set up output destination to your liking.

Set up your scenes to your liking.

Ezpz lemon squeezy. Enjoy.

EDIT: Adjust bitrates and quality to your preferences ofc.

I use OBS all the time. Even with my dinky little GT 1030, it still provides a good balance of FPS in the game I'm playing and decent quality on the recording side. I don't use it for streaming although it looks very easy to set up for that.

As for the issue you're having, looks like the other folks here beat me to it. Try what CaffeineAddict suggested and we can troubleshoot from there!

I don't remember what settings I used when I started OBS for the first time.

Here's my "inxi":

CPU: 6-core Intel Core i7-3930K (-MT MCP-)
speed/min/max: 1642/1200/3800 MHz Kernel: 5.15.0-124-generic x86_64
Up: 3h 8m Mem: 5655.5/23967.0 MiB (23.6%)
Storage: 558.93 GiB (33.8% used) Procs: 338 Shell: Bash inxi: 3.3.13

There's nothing wrong with my internet speed. It only gets really slow and choppy whenever I use OBS. Like really really slow, as in not normal slow, not a little bit but insanely slow as in being essentially useless. Here's a screenshot of my speedtest in normal working condition:
