I was on a web hosting company's site, checking out VPS prices.

Their site tried to push me towards a dedicated server. The promotional text was something along the lines of, "Use a dedicated server - it's 20% faster!"

I don't think this was the desired effect, but I had a pretty hearty chuckle - loud enough to disturb the dog and make the wife look over. It made me wonder how bad their virtualized services were - ie a VPS. After all, their VPS' are losing 20% performance over bare metal...

20% is a lot for this field. I'd expect to see a loss if you benchmarked the two, but the losses should be closer to 1/4 of that - maybe a 5% loss *if that much*. I don't think there was a 20% loss back when VMware first introduced their virtualization, and that was like two decades ago.

Needless to say, I did not pick up a new VPS. It's not a pressing matter, as I already have a spare that's sitting idle.
 


Which VPS provider is that may I ask, if you can't share it here just send me a pm I'm quite curious.
