Well, one is used for the other. ML is one way of training an AI.

We also have different stages of AI. The third stage is what everyone seems to think AI is - but we're scratching at the 2nd stage. The 3rd stage is what you see in movies, like Ex Machina or SkyNet from the Terminator movies.

Anyhow, both AI and ML are real things and are in use around the world.

Also, I'd not worry too much about AI being a danger to society. If things go pear-shaped, we can just unplug 'em long before it becomes a problem.

I was listening to the Apple Insider podcast and the co-host, who's a bit of a Negative Nancy, was claiming that AI is just a buzzword for Machine Learning and that the two are actually the same thing.

I had to fact check him.

Ex Machina was a great movie!
