As some forum members so far already know, I'm huge fan of 4X turn based strategy (TBS) games because:
1.) You can chill and plan as much as you want every turn, there is no hurry like in RTS games, and a single gameplay can take days or weeks or even a month.
2.) The objective of every such game is empire management and military conquests with all their difficulties that puts you into a place of an emperor in pursuit to expand your empire like in real life which is all but not easy.
So the real challenge is there and only your careful planning and problem solving can make you win, as opposed to a game where victory depends on fast thinking or how fast you click with a mouse, which I'm not fan of.
So out of 10's of many 4X games I played I now stumbled upon one that is so challenging and great that I'm pretty much sure it's the best of all and very much underrated compared to popular ones.
This game was released in 2019 so it's not old, the graphics are not AAA but this is totally irrelevant because game mechanics is so difficult it will suck you dry playing.

OK, enough talking here is the game:
store.steampowered.com
And here is gameplay series to see how it feels:
There is also PDF manual included with game which is a must read if you want to succeed in this game because like I said game mechanics is all but simple.

What makes this game special compared to other 4X games?
Game mechanics is such that you can't simply recruit huge armies and snowball other empires, something at which other games in this sub-genre suffer and that ruins the gameplay a lot, because once you're strong it's not longer fun.
In this game once you're strong your empire might collapse into stone age if you're not careful, just like it happened with big and powerful empires in history like Rome.
As for the AI, which is a weak point in this genre, the AI is certainly very competent, unpredictive and challenging.
Stellaris, Civilization, Age of wonders, distant worlds, endless space, master of orion, polaris sector etc. etc. can all hide from this one no matter their bigger player base and more copies sold.
