Here is just an answer/explanation as to why print jobs are sometimes crappy. The display shows that there's still plenty of black ink inside the printer, so this boils splotchy print jobs down to one of two possibilities:

Alot of times, printheads need to get inked up before they stop screwing up the print job. I thought it might have had something to do with Kedit, but the problem went away after doing one sheet of paper...

It's been ages since I've printed anything. I've scanned and emailed stuff, but not printing. I have a dedicated scanner for that.

But, there's often a 'maintenance' routine that you can run that'll clear print heads, align/calibrate the heads if they're off, and stuff like that. I dunno if your printer has that option, but I thought I'd mention it.

Family members do not use a printer much but occasionally paper cannot be avoided. With inkjets there is always half an hour of unsavory language and wasted ink getting the thing unclogged and ready to use. I used to dread anyone wanting to print anything but since switching to a laser printer there has never been a problem even after several weeks of inactivity.

I just decided today that i wanted to print my lyrics and spend a little less time in front of a computer.

I'm pretty sure it does, it's a brother printer. I honestly don't trust any other printer brand, i used HP for years during times when average people thought printers were more important...i hate HP and canon printers so much.

Off topic: Whatcha gonna do with the lyrics?

I'm pretty sure it does, it's a brother printer.

Maybe next time, when the printer has sat, you can try that before printing? It might take less ink, for example.

I do know someone that just buys a new printer whenever they run out of ink. According to them, a new printer is cheaper than replacing the ink, but they buy the cheapest printers they can find. They give the ink-less printers to a local thrift store who probably just end up recycling 'em after a while.

Well then, break a leg! (Figuratively, of course.)

There's something addicting about performing in front of a live audience. I've done a lot of it and I regret very little of it. During my university years I sometimes made my entire living from playing guitar. It was a grinding work but it was significantly better than lugging concrete forms - though it didn't pay nearly as much.

I'll stop the off topic stuff now. I already mentioned the maintenance bit so I don't wanna derail it further.

I've only worked with lasers for the last 17 years.

The one I got 17 years ago still runs fine and has not ever cost me anything but paper. That's a Dell.

The Fuji-Xerox I got maybe 7 years ago, I have just recently bought new toner cartridges for, also its first expense.

For me, it has been a good investment.

Cheers

You would think, that after so many years, printer tech would evolve just a little bit, but its the same BS I've had to deal with since my days of the 600MHz celeron pre-built I had when I was a newbie. Yeah I'm that old.

Well, one thing has certainly changed - printer manufacturers have become more cancerous than ever in regards to their proprietary ink safeguards.

They make printers cheap so they don't last...make money selling the ink for a truck loads of cash.

With your Brother you may need to clean it and the print heads if it is not used too often. I have had that problem here at times. I use a little alcohol and qtip and clean everything that I can seems to work after a fashion. But that machine should have a print head cleaning routine also. Make sure the slide bar or rod is also clean that the print cartridges ride on is clean also. Lazer printers are great also. One of the problems I've found with ink jets is that if not use often the ink will dry up some and this can cause problems. as it's constancy is not correct for the machine.
