Most of the hardware above is used and purchased cheap. I also have a ton of stuff that sits around for another time.
Ok so now that the hardware is over a little about myself.
I am a geek, have been forever. Never fit in in school and let's just say that I have some issues both physical and mental. I started learning a little bit back in the 80's on an Apple II and in the 90's had access to a 486 running DOS and Windows 3.1 Started learning DOS and loved it. When I started tinkering with computers in the Windows 95 era that had a separate partition holding the OS I started duplicating that for my installs but without a partition, boot the floppy with cd drivers, clean up the HDD and copy the install files to a folder then reboot and install from the folder, then hide and lock the folder. LOVED DOS and as a senior in HS I went to the local community college and did a few courses which included DOS, last day of the DOS class which I skipped regularly the teacher came in and in and said he was ashamed of the class because out of all the college students a HS student had the highest grade.
Continued to tinker with things and it has expanded from there. Basically managed an in house ISP for an apartment building I lived in along with their cable head end. We took a couple ISP's and brought them in through an 8 port router that could load balance over 4 ISP's. The cable system was built using both DirecTV and Dish Network receivers. I have pictures of the cable system somewhere so if someone is interested in seeing things just let me know. Also handled all the maintenance around the building but ended up walking away when the family who owned it started to have issues... sadly the building is shut down now and likely to be demoed.
Worked for a WISP at one point for a few months managing the office, troubleshooting, pc repair, and install prep with some installs. Was very interesting shooting 2.4ghz WiFi connections up to 10 miles.
Now I am a professional bum, more and more issues have creeped into my life so I do what I can until I collapse when it needs to be done. I am in the process of rebuilding what I refer to as a "slum lord house." Replaced the roof, electrical, and water supply systems while also installing a ton of ethernet and other datacomm and trying to fix years of abuse while living in it. Basically building a smarthouse and redoing everything on a budget using ESP8266's and ESP32's for sensors and controllers funneling everything through HomeAssistant. The final goal is a house that is able to do a TON of things automatically with FULL local control.
On the server (since I am sure I will be asked) I run Plex, OpenSpeedTest, SyncThing, URbackup, and NextCloud. On the Router I use multiple vLAN's, WireGuard, DHCP servers (yeah it's expected but some people gotta ask), UnboundDNS (again expected--also setup similar to PiHole), NTP, Intrusion Detection (hence the 16GB of RAM), and NGINX reverse Proxy with ACME for SSL certificates.
On my desktop I game, create, and edit. I have a small Youtube channel I am trying to grow which is tough when editing video makes me want to jump off the roof... But I do some graphic design along with the video stuff and often have Plex running and playing music no matter what I am doing. I am also running Frigate on my desktop using Docker but am looking to pick up a 2U box that I can dedicate to Frigate alone. So far have 5 camera setup with 11 more to add in over time as I get things done around the house and have a couple bucks to add in.
I also love to travel when I can and learned to SCUBA dive after my wife passed away in 2019. So far I have been able to dive in a few area's around the Caribbean and the US. Eventually I would like to setup a program that will help people who have survived child abuse or have PTSD for other reasons and are low income learn to dive and hopefully provide them with a basic set of gear so they can go out and get into the water. I LOVE to be in the water as it's a place where I feel relaxed and comfortable, being under the water is even better because I am weightless and the joint pain goes away.
Not sure what else to say here so I guess this is where I leave things.
