Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere, Thanks SO much for your continued help! I am up now to try a day at work (9.5 hrs without drive time) but should be able to respond more later. I will probably take you up on the offer for help. I don't know that I will do a "dual boot" for awhile... IDW deal with any possible...

Getting Started - New to Linux

Let me rephrase this... the current system is only using about 2GB of RAM, just sitting here lol... My concern is that running a Linux distro beside it would max out the RAM... or am I missing the point here.... Only one boots at a time; right, so only one would be using the system resources; is...

Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere, had to get computer properly configured and updated... Here is the downlow on this Windows 7, sp 1: NTFS 1.80Ghz Proc: AMD A6-6310 APU with AMD radeon R4 graphics 8GB RAM total - looks like around half is being used now. I haven't cleaned it up and deleted unneeded programs yet...

Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere, ok, I have to first charge it, get the dust off it, and find the IP address it uses so it can even have internet access... our router is locked down to just what we are currently using. THEN, I can see about that. I want to check and see what the system has for memory etc.

Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere, I didn't even THINK about doing the dual boot on the windows 7, instead of this one... interesting. Yeah, once I decided on a distro I would like to stick with and work with, I might do that. Thanks again and don't worrry; you will. :)

Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere, You are 100% right in that I can't have the expectation that I will know and be able to run what I want on Linux just three days into it. I guess I was going with the expectation that I was smarter than the average bear and could figure it out quickly. Ha! I don't plan on giving...

    New Guy

Might I add that the utility that I used to do checksum was simply found at cnet.com by googling "checksum utiltiy". I used it for the three distros I have attempted trying. :)

@Suezbell, the links from arochester are great - I hadn't even looked at them yet.

Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere - thanks so much - I do have an older (not toss-away though) laptop running win 7, but I have it in case of work needing to be done on this one. I don't have another one to try. I am not completely giving up.. I am just not going to spend full days off (as I did the last 4 days)...

Getting Started - New to Linux

Well guys it looks like I might be calling it quits. I can't get any games to function fully and I have indeed spent the entire day trying. One thing that has stopped me up was simply (after downloading a file) installing a file on the Linux system. I couldn't figure out how to do it right...

Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere, yeah, I didn't understand what I was doing, and pathing through the files in terminal. I didn't even know the ./ meant the "current folder". I guess I was trying to path out to where it was folder by folder. I am sorry, I am very new at all of this. I got the game running fine but...

Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere, I think I have settled on Wire for a messaging app and believe it or not, after adding some themes (error in terminal prompted research on the subject) and lots of dependencies; I have a game installing. I don't know much about the install process but what is the difference between...

Getting Started - New to Linux

Yes, in my search yesterday; I found that added dependencies and libraries are quite often needed to run games on Linux. Never even heard of the word "dependencies" until yesterday. I was a partial geek to start with. I have a degree in CIS but am not wanting to use it as in for a job. My...

Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere, thanks! It might be the case about us being on a level beyond what Linux can provide but I am trying to get at least one game operating. One thing at a time :) I am glad Ubuntu has UEFI worked out; one less thing to deal with. I appreciate all of your help. I will be reading the...

Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere - The script files I was talking about was downloaded directly from Gog gaming site from my account with them. They end in .sh. They have to be converted (best I understand) to executable files within Linux system. This is something that I am working on reviewing. I was able to...

Getting Started - New to Linux

@atanere, no, I haven't tried any of the dual boot options or live modes. VirtualBox isn't really a problem; as I have found instruction for everything. I say this, because even a dual boot; I would have to learn how to share files etc. I believe at this time; running as a VM is the safest...

Getting Started - New to Linux

Ok - here is where I am at with running Ubuntu 16.04.3 in VirtualBox on a host Windows 10: I have successfully added a wireless printer and USB 3.0 capabilities (though I didn't quite understand everything - but it works). I have downloaded shell script files for a game and intending on seeing...

Getting Started - New to Linux

I think it would also be important to note, we create/edit players and games and I have no idea if that could incorporate into Linuxs' filing system at all. In windows... we can just msg the files to one another and put them in the corresponding folder and reload the game....

@wizardfromoz, what do you mean "65 -70" distros? We play RPG games, like NWN1 and 2, Baldurs gate 1 and 2EE , Icewind Dale EE, Planescape Torment (have it but not tried it). The previous (but torment) are all multiplayer and my husband and I play together. Mostly d&d. No on the flash, I...

Getting Started - New to Linux

Ok... I have had nothing but failure and freezing, slow processing etc trying to run ANY of the distros I have done through VirtualBox. I don't know that it is VirtualBox and I know I have enough memory/hd and processing power; but I couldn't even get Solus Budgie to operate. It stated that...
