Samsung 8x0 EVO and Queued TRIM. Is it a big deal?

After running a search for that parameter and reading the article you posted it seems that I did no greater harm to my disk by running the fstrim command than reducing the security of the encryption by a little. If that! That parameter is added to grub in order to allow discard operations such...

    Where are you from?

I like it. It's pretty chill. But don't get me wrong, I like Brazil too. It's only that you have to spend some time abroad to understand how much the madness that goes on in that country gets into your nerves. And this is not a merely political statement.

Samsung 8x0 EVO and Queued TRIM. Is it a big deal?

sda1 was (and is) a FAT partition 537Mb in size (and only 1.2% full). That's on boot/efi and it's a EFI system partition. sda2 is a Ext4 partition 768Mb in size with 491Mb free. That's in /boot and I guess that's where grub is. sda3 is the main partition with nearly 800Gb free. This one is...

Samsung 8x0 EVO and Queued TRIM. Is it a big deal?

I'll continue to use my disks normally. If I run into any issue and learn more while troubleshooting I'll make sure to post it here. What really made me almost pee my pants were the 500Mb or so trimmed from boot/efi and another 400Mb or so from /boot, as I thought it had deleted the bootloader...

Samsung 8x0 EVO and Queued TRIM. Is it a big deal?

What I think I gathered from the little further research I did: Queued TRIM is indeed the one that takes place constantly, it is so called because the TRIM instructions are "queued" between other read/write instructions given to the drive during normal use. The alternative to that is one-off or...

Samsung 8x0 EVO and Queued TRIM. Is it a big deal?

I have not one but two 860 EVO drives, and I guess many of you use drives of the 8x0 line too. I came across this piece of news: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Samsung-860-870-More-Quirks Now the questions are: What is queued trim exactly? And is this a big deal or a...

    HOLY....BLEEP!

I've heard that elsewhere as well. If you install Linux on bleeding edge hardware you'll probably going to have a hard time getting all the drivers you need. I also had a relative who a couple years back made the mistake of buying one of those HP laptops brand new. Then she was complaining that...

    HOLY....BLEEP!

I'm in Europe, where the market for refurbished/second-hand laptops is perhaps not as developed. I've seen those listed on amazon.de for about 500€ and they probably come with a QWERTZ keyboard (no way to check). In any case it's an indication of our sad state of affairs that we're looking at...

    HOLY....BLEEP!

I've been looking for a laptop that can reliably run ubuntu, my requirements are simple: A sturdy build with a solid keyboard. Easily replaceable battery and the ability to run with the battery disconnected if necessary. A 15" or bigger matte screen with reasonable brightness. No need for a...

    Windows 10 in Gnome Boxes

I found this: https://github.com/tetration/Simcity_3000_Linux_Installer I might not try it, though, cause the author takes no responsibility if I end up burning down my house or flunking some subjects at school because of it. Joking aside, there seems to be a modern installer for the old ISO...

    Windows 10 in Gnome Boxes

For the most part it's point-and-click adventures purchased from GOG. A number of them are available for linux, but a few aren't. The second half of the Last Door series is, but the first half is not (though it is on steam). Besides that I'd like to get Simcity 3000 to run and also a newish game...

    Windows 10 in Gnome Boxes

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound impatient. If anything I feel I should have tried everything I described in #3 before posting #1 and #2. It is just that what I found seems to be a genuine dead end (on that path I was at least). I'll give it a shot with VirtualBox. Might learn a thing or two in...

    Windows 10 in Gnome Boxes

Ok, seems no one has much to say about this and I don't blame you. This is probably my last update on the matter. Here's what I found out: Part of the issue is that sound cards need to be virtualized for virtual machines. This may be obvious to most people here but it was not obvious to a noob...

    Windows 10 in Gnome Boxes

I guess this is one of those things I should have given a shot before actually coming here and asking. Well, I did just that. My experience: The windows ISO installs fairly easy. I then gave the VM about 60Gb of disk space and 8Gb of RAM. I installed the Spice guest tools and it automatically...

    Windows 10 in Gnome Boxes

I have an unused Win10 license lying around and I would like the install Windows in Gnome Boxes to play some old untaxing games that are not available on Linux. I wonder if people have had a good experience doing this and whether there are some stumbling blocks I should be aware of. Many thanks!

    Dual Booting Ubuntu and Ubuntu

I just did a search and some people have indeed managed to run Warsaw in VM, but the thing seems a bit fiddly to get to run in Linux at all, despite the fact that it comes as a .deb package as well. In any case I'm just glad I don't have to use it anymore.

    Dual Booting Ubuntu and Ubuntu

Well, I also have important work documents and personal pictures and videos, nothing top-secret or X-rated, but if the device gets stolen I don't want thieves to have access to my privacy. I think it's good practice for laptops. Granted that the nuc is a desktop that stays mostly at home, but...

    Dual Booting Ubuntu and Ubuntu

Thank you. May I ask how this will handle the drives' encryption? Will each drive then have its own bootloader partition?
