Today's article was hard to title...

Have you ever tried to have your terminal's output show both in the terminal and be saved to a file? Have you ever tried to condense that into a headline that search engines like? I suspect not. https://linux-tips.us/save-a-commands-output-to-a-file-while-showing-it-in-the-terminal/ Well...

Solved USB Speed test on LMDE

You can do some testing in the terminal. Follow these instructions and then move a large file to the USB device: https://linux-tips.us/monitor-usb-bandwidth/ But, the GUI way will be easier.

G'Day From the Centre of Australia.

I too am from New England. However, that's in the US. Welcome aboard. We sure have a lot of Aussies.

Make your man command output colored!

That's fancier and more involved than the way I know. Neat! Thanks for sharing.

Dual booting Linux and Windows 7

I suppose you can. Usually just the first dozen or so lines are the only important lines. At the end of the day, it's probably down to your computer's speed. That's why this is just for fun and to show you one of the great things you can do with the terminal. I know, you said you'd avoid it, but...

Do you understand everything in htop?

Alas, it's the only way I know how. So, I'll learn something from your thread - hopefully.

Very new to Linux, want to install Schism Tracker

That's an important step. I'd start a (new) thread aiming to resolve that - giving as much information as you can. I'd place this on hold until you have a fully working Linux. Resolve that and the rest is easy. Resolving that may not be easy.

Do you understand everything in htop?

It's a future article but you can do colored man pages a few ways. `sudo apt install most export PAGER=most` Then run something like man top to see the results. If you use ZSH I seem to recall it's even easier. I think it's a simple plugin but don't quote me on that.

Journey to Create a Linux Distro

I'd start by installing a distro and learning about Linux in-depth. Then, I'd look at "Linux From Scratch". It's not an easy thing to do, but you'll learn a great deal.

Dual booting Linux and Windows 7

Just for fun, open your terminal and enter systemd-analyze blame and it will tell you all about what's taking time during the start process.

Your Discord Data Is Being Sold to Law Enforcement and AI Companies Assume your Discord conversations are public.

Any response to this would be too close to political, and I'm not above the rules.

Very new to Linux, want to install Schism Tracker

What distro are you using? You can, quite literally, install this from the default repositories and have it working in seconds. Well, I know that to be true for Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and others in that family. I have it installed just because I tested it and haven't removed it yet.

    Fedora40 released today.

Thanks for the information. I guess those are good reasons to switch. It seems a bit disruptive, but the GNOME spin will be available for those who prefer it. However, I thought GNOME satisfied those requirements already, including the Wayland support. I guess, in reality, I don't pay that...

Dual booting Linux and Windows 7

Not to waste your time, but what do you think so far? Are you finding things easily? Is the desktop environment intuitive? I tell new users that things are (usually) where you expect them to be. If you want a browser, look in the application menu under 'Internet'. It's just that easy to get...

Do you understand everything in htop?

Seriously, check the man page for top: man top and then man htop. Both are fantastic man pages. Not all man pages are created equal, I'm afraid. Some are very good and some appear to be an afterthought. But, in this case, they're both remarkably good.

How Often Do You Trim Your SSD ?

Laziness, really. Ease of access, if otherwise asked. I have a server that has been up for years now. Not so much these days. Computers are pretty good at going into a low-power mode with the monitor off. I also give my hardware away fairly regularly as I upgrade my devices to newer devices...

Do you understand everything in htop?

You can actually just use the man page for this one. It's very descriptive. It's on-par with the man page for the venerable top command. I prefer htop, when given the opportunity - and it's almost always available for me as it's an option in every distro I regularly use. I did write this...

    Fedora40 released today.

The link doesn't specify. I could possibly root through search engine results, I suppose. To save me a few bits, what's going to be the new default DE?

How Often Do You Trim Your SSD ?

I just let the kernel do its thing and have for quite a while. I haven't manually invoked trim since kernel 2.x and haven't had a problem. To top it off, I often go weeks without rebooting. For example: $ uptime 11:15:17 up 50 days, 20:59, 3 users, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.00 So far...
