¿Cual es el mejor hardware para Linux?

I apologize if I have broken any unwritten rule of the site. I recognize I am here just as a self-invited guest. Maybe it should be a good idea to detail the language clause in the rules link and change the "we are a community " statement for "we are an english speaking community". I´ll see...

what do I need in a router?

Hi As you said you have an Arris TM1602A, it seems to be a simple modem so you really need a router. If you would like to build it yourself use a PC and take a look for example at ClearOS ,it is a linux distro prepaged with what you need, routing, dhcp, firewall and some management consoles. If...

I need to design a server

I will let you in a little secret, all linux are basically the same, some are optimized for some tasks but any recent distro (distribution) would be capable to do the same tasks. So choose any one you like or feel comfortable with. Also , once you find a media server app you like, sometimes...

I need to design a server

Hi On the hardware side, for testing purposes, any PC wold do the job, just add disk space as needed. For access remotely you mean inside your lan/house or from the internet? If from the internet you need to start looking how to setup a VPN. For serving the media files take a look at Plex. Good luck

CAN I BUY OR CONVERT A SMARTPHONE TO A LINUX PHONE

In the dark ages of PDA (Personal Digital Assitant) I could install Linux Opie distro on a HP iPaq. It was a lower end model and could not do much with it, but there were ipaq cellphones so maybe these could work with linux too

What I Use To Create An Image Of My System.

Playing in Legendary mode, you can create an image of your system with the dd command. Being lazy I use clonezilla for that. I had a server with some clonezilla images stored , booted the new systems with clonezilla from a USB drive and tranfer the image by ssh

Where to verify component compatibility with linux?

Hi Not to state the obvious but I have had some luck just googling "xxxx-part linux" , look for reviews or opinions on linux users with such part before actually buying it. If you already have the part(s), just try it, linux continues to amaze me making work almost anything I throw at it.

Hi Banky , maybe I can be of some assistance. There may be 2 ways to update you laptop bios. a) Get a bootable flash drive and copy an autoexecutable version of the update file provided by the laptop vendor. So you boot your laptop from your flash drive and it automatically starts the update...

Solved Can anyone recommend an old laptop?

I am partial to second hand bussiness laptops , like Dell Latitudes or Lenovo Thinkpads, HP Elitebooks. But it has been a few years since I have seen one with cd/dvd rom. The last one I remember is the Latitude E6x40 (x the number of the screen size). An USB DVD wouldn't be ok?

    Backdoor

Maybe off-topic but I remember a panel with several linux developers including Linus Torvalds, they were asked if some goverment agency ever asked to put a backdoor in linux at kernel level. Linus say No! ,while nodding up and down

Help building a new linux server

I would be uncomfortable with a NUC if they are going to be continously powered on because of heat dissipation. If it is just ocasionally used then it is Ok. If your are not going for an already built model then get the parts and build one, it is really easy (Even Henry Cavill/Superman built his...

Help building a new linux server

Hi, I think that in your situation a business desktop PC should work for you. The Dell Optiplex or Lenovo Thinkcentre models can be found new or second hand once their business lease is over with similar specs as your actual system, and these usually work well with linux, just add a new hard...

It's time for a poll. How long have you used Linux?

Found some free linux cds back 1995-1996. Tried Debian, Redhat 5.2 and Mandrake 7.0 . Found that Mandrake had the best spanish localization (I am mexican).
