    Several distros and discouraged

Is simply turning off hibernation and suspend an option? I never use either. Blank the screen with the screensaver, optionally have the monitor(s) turn off (some do this automatically with no input), optionally have the session password locked, optionally log out and turn the monitors off...

    aliases vs scripts

BTW, that doesn't mean one command. A trivial example:: alias x='cd && clear' Goes home and clears the screen in one keystroke. You can do conditional stuff on one line, like: alias blockid='if test "$EUID" = 0 ; then /sbin/blkid ; else su - -c "/sbin/blkid" ; fi' This one line alias...

    aliases vs scripts

Anything that takes multiple lines -> scripts. They are in ~/bin although not binary, since in my distro ~/bin is empty and already in my $PATH. Aliases are one-liners, whether a function or not, in .bashrc

    Which Distribution cured your Distrohopping?

For me it was openSUSE. 20 years ago. I still play with other distros in VMs. Four others at the moment.

Solved Safe remove drive vs sync command?

Yeah, except the order of those lines should be: echo Please wait for sync.... sync echo Finished. of course.

Solved Safe remove drive vs sync command?

I always add a couple lines at the end of any rsync backup script: sync echo Please wait for sync... echo Finished. Required for USB but useful, too, for platter spinners. Backup is pretty much all I use spinning media for these days.

5.11.16 (first kernel supporting AMD 5700G) up to 6.9.9. See bugzilla for complete details. Probe masked every possible combination. All I can conclude is kernel never properly supported 'G' processors.

Have not found a solution. Filed formal bug report w/ SuSE. Bug 1224457 @ https://bugzilla.opensuse.org . Tested many different OpenSuSE, as well as Fedora, Mint, Ubuntu and Debian. Same problem with all of them, no detecting the ALC887. I thought ASUS firmware bug but now you have seen it...

Re: Sound card not detected I think I have a similar problem. I have no sound at all from an ALC887 on an ASUS mobo with an AMD 5700G. What is your CPU?

    New install, missing sound

Just to be very clear, there are no cards in this machine. The Realtek is on the motherboard, while the AMD/ATI is in the 5700G CPU. Not that it matters. openSuSE Leap 15.5 is using a 5.14.x version of the kernel. I could install Tumbleweed (maybe the Slowroll variant). In fact, let me fire...

osprey, thank you for staying interested in this problem. In light of this: mad_hatter@rabbit_hole:~> aplay -l aplay: device_list:274: no soundcards found... do you think it worthwhile to try any of your suggestions? The business with alsa-base.conf in /etc/modprobe.d I had already tried on...

No, it doesn't. I think that is the same as in #3 where I tried: pulseaudio --kill pulseaudio --start

    New install, missing sound

I had visited that page earlier. I didn't expect it to work: 1) The original post is 14 years old, although there was followup. Hopefully since then that particular problem has been addressed. 2) The directory mentioned in opensuse leap 15.5 does not contain a file named alsa-base.conf, nor...
