What was your first Linux distribution and version of that distribution?

Puppy Linux run from an USB stick. It was in 2008/9. No idea which version. Then I installed Linux Mint 9 on my hard drive and used it for years.

    Facebook Yes/No

I used to have a Facebook account, but, due to my name/surname combination being quite unique, I decided to get rid of it. It was to easy to find me. I had to deal with messages like "Is that you?" and accept invitations from people I barely remembered. My main page was filled with stories and...

Anyone else feel weird when they see unknown linux os's. Stuff like Zorin OS

I'm sure there are unknown distros I wouldn't install on my computer, but Zorin? It's like someone on Windows forum saying "Anyone else feels weird when they see unknowns os's. Stuff like Linux." ;)

firefox - update manager doesn't work

As far as I remember, Firefox has the same function to update itself while is manually installed from tarball. Mike seems to be doing it this way, so it doesn't look like the function has been discontinued. It's really not that difficult to run Firefox (or any other program) this way and it's...

    3 Gb Ram

My old laptop has only 2GB of ram and I successfully run Sparky Linux on it. To be honest, the desktop environment is more important than the distro itself in this case . I switch between Budgie and LXDE and, while the former is better for multimedia (no screen tearing, better support for...

    About the Solus Project...

I've tried Solus. It was an interesting distro. Fully independent, not based on anything and came with its own DE. I didn't stick with it, because, at the time, I was really into coding and Solus was not the best choice for that purpose. Budgie, on the other hand, is something I still use with...

    'Puppy' turns 20 this year....

Believe it or not, but Puppy was my first Linux distro. Sometimes around 12 years ago I successfully tried to run it from a USB stick in a frugal mode with persistence and my adventure with Linux had started. At the time I wasn't brave enough to wipe Windows from my hard drive or mess with dual...

    firefox ESR via gui yet?

Yep. The whole situation is a bit disappointing, IMO. You've already pointed to Mozilla's FTP server, but there is another (more GUI-like) way to get these tarballs. You can simply choose and download the one you need from Mozilla's website - https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/all/

    firefox ESR via gui yet?

It is also not beginner friendly. Myself, I use the appimage version of Librewolf, but I had to manually add it to the application menu, download and set an icon for it etc. I also update it manually by downloading a new version and moving it to /usr/local/bin. So, no - I wouldn't recommend...

Beginner here, don't know what distribution I should use

Try Linux Mint, first. It's known for being a good choice for beginners. If you need something lighter then you can have a look at Sparky Linux. It works fine on my ancient laptop with 2GB of RAM.
