Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

Actually, it varies. There used to be two other guys locally who also refurbished and gave away computers (one died and the other moved away). We would compare notes and a common complaint was a lack of gratitude or even politeness among donees. If one of us offered a machine up many responses...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

Thanks Guys. Paid support is a welcome option, but in my particular case, perhaps not. Most of the folks I give machines to often have difficulty affording even a surge suppressor (so I toss one in whenever possible). This makes my task more challenging and narrows options considerably (price...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

Very interesting reading. BTW - I've tried downloading MX19 from two different repositories but upon burning the ISOs to a DVD and booting them, I'm getting SARDU boot loader, but no ISO. How very odd. Running a deep virus scan on the machine used to download the ISOs, then trying AntiX / Legacy.

Yes, I came looking for assistance in installing Linux, not a debate. What hospitality, no? So I agree that we get back on the track of installing and use of Linux. Thanks.

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

Not finding an edit button on my screen, but my military / governmental computer work commenced in 1988. I suppose I was lumping in the Unix systems in (see the book KooKoo's Egg by Cliff Stoll). Okay, when it comes to Linux, I'll defer to your knowledge. Still.. Isn't it a long time to have a...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

No typo Wiz. Had the first personal computer in my unit (an $1800 Tandy 1400 LT lapcrusher) rocking twin 720k diskette drives with MS DOS, then computer networking with the US DoS and DoD. I didn't say LINUX. But we had a variety of systems flying in loose formation, from mainframes to Wang...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

Well this was bizarre. I downloaded an ISO of legacy MX 19, burned it to YUMI and then to two separate DVDs. It kept coming up as Sardu, but no sign of MX19. Wish I'd remembered which repository I downloaded it from.

Darry, please know that I am not disagreeing with you. I have been involved with computers in various guises since the 1980's. I've long had an interest in computers and been called to help out when others were having a computer issue. One of the tech-help jokes is about someone calling into...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

Okay, tried the Multiboot USB, but for some reason, no joy. Have loaded MX 19, Bodhi Legacy and eLIVE on a flash drive using YUMI. YUMI did not have eLIVE as a distro in its menu selection, so will have to use System or Grub installer. Will try MX first and see how that goes.

"Does it hinder learning the Linux environment??????????????" Never Attempt To Teach a Pig To Sing; It Wastes Your Time and Annoys the Pig -- Robert Heinlein, 1973 People have other things to do with their time. TRON said it best. They are Users. They pay others to create the hardware...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

Thanks Tolkem. Looks like I'm going to have a series of different Linux ISO's on a boot USB. Normally I can fit a few on a single flash drive using the YUMI installer, but YUMI doesn't digest all installs very well, so if you can recommend a multiboot USB installer that can accommodate eLive...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

Poorguy, it's not about you. It's not your machine that will have an XP themed install. It's a young kid, or an old lady, or some recovering vet. Oddly enough, to some, the very thought that someone, somewhere, has a machine running Linux with a Windows themed start button, task bar and icons...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

I did try Linux Lite and thought it quite good, but if I recall correctly, they've ceased support for 32-bit architecture and you have to reach back a bit and download an older distro which does. Indeed, a lot of developers are ceasing support of 32 bit architecture boards. I suppose that even...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

Thanks darry1966. Now, considering that any potential Windows convert has little experience in implementing what you've described (much less familiarity with terms such as "pinboard"), do you have a previous post or webpage URL you could direct the curious to, with instructions, such as...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

@wizardfromoz, @darry1966 Ha. So *that's* why you shouldn't even say the name Voldemort. I look forward to hearing about if and how ROX can be integrated as a DE in Q4OS. Some specific questions I have for him. 1) If Q4OS comes with Trinity and works well with the install, but I load...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

It took a forum rant, but I have managed to get a response from the good people at Q4OS. I've told as many who might listen that I *really* like their install, but for their lack of hardware recognition and automatic driver install (the kind you see in lightweight distros based on Ubuntu)...

Microsoft: we were wrong about open source

Nik, Some in politics have a rejoinder that goes, "if you don't want an X, then don't buy and X." Now it was true that in the era of 1998, for the most part, if you wanted a computer, you would have to go to a big box store, select one, pay for it and take it home. A big chunk of the purchase...

Distro Candidates: MX vs. AntiX, which is best for the following purpose?

Thanks sp331yi. I'll look into it. The Wiz suggested eLive the other day. So now I have AntiX, MX, eLive and Robo to look at. And you are exactly right. I am looking for a Windows up front, Linux running in the Background distro. I really do think that's the magic combination for mass adoption...
