Which the distro Linux is for beginner

Have you tried going to a computer tech forum? There might be someone there able to help, it would be a shame if your laptop ended up in a garbage heap because of a failed installation.

Okay thanks. So if I do the firefox update only firefox will update and I won't get upgraded to "sylvia", right?

    Firefox Update

I'm just afraid upgrading the OS might make my netbook run slower. I picked 18.1 because the specs recommended 1 g of ram whereas on 18.3 I think the recommendation is 2 gigs.

Which the distro Linux is for beginner

I didn't mean take it to an installer to get it fixed, what I meant was that there is an option when installing linux mint that says "install alongside Windows". If you choose this option the linux partition will automatically be made for you and you don't have to mess with the partitions. I...

    Firefox Update

No I don't necessarily need the latest Firefox but I would like a newer version because some secure websites won't allow logins if the browser is too old. I think the one I have installed is 50.1 What I really would like to know is what does "71.0 + linuxmint2 + sylvia" mean? Could anyone...

Which the distro Linux is for beginner

It sounds like your partitions got messed up when you either tried to shrink them or tried to install Linux. I recently installed linux mint without touching the partitions, what you do is choose the option to "install alongside Windows" and the installer will make the Linux partition for you...

Yes I saw that page when searching more info about Unbuntuzilla but I don't understand any of it. I don't know how to use the terminal and am not familiar with any of its commands.

    Firefox Update

I recently installed linux mint 8.1 (Serena) xfce desktop on my netbook. I would like to update firefox to a newer version, there is an update for firefox available in the update manager that says "71.0 + linuxmint2 + sylvia" What does that mean, would I be upgraded to a newer version of linux...

    Linux For Netbook

I was able to remove the warning from the C drive by right clicking on the drive from Windows and doing a check for errors. The warning on the other drive remained but that didn't get in the way of my installing Linux. I did however decide to install xfce because I don't know how user friendly...

    Linux For Netbook

Why does gparted have a triangular warning beside 2 of the partitions in the pic I posted earlier?

    Linux For Netbook

Thank you very much for the detailed instructions. I'm confused about the primary partitions, I thought that there can only be 4 and since the 3 already there are primary wouldn't I need to make an extended partition, at least for one of the partitions to be created?

    Linux For Netbook

Thanks for the links, I understand partitions a little better now but it is still confusing to me. So it would be the C drive that I would resize by making an extended partition and then within the extended partition I make a logical partition on which linux would be installed? Would I need to...

    Linux For Netbook

Disk management doesn't give me an option for shrinking partitions, I think it's an xp thing. Even if it did I would have no idea what I'm doing.

    Linux For Netbook

Thanks for the links and recommendation. I've never installed linux on a computer before so I don't know how easy it would be to install MX, the instructions I've come across on installing MX all say you need to make a partition, which I don't know how. I know that with Mint there is an option...

I would like to install a linux OS on my eee netbook as a dual boot with windows xp which is what the netbook currently has. What distro would you guys recommend? I was thinking Mint xfce, or would something more lighter work better? The netbook has 1g of ram
