    How to automatically suspend HDD

I have noticed hdparm doesn't work with nvme m.2 drives. I suppose there are some technical reasons for this, but just the same...

Laptop with 3 Network connection - traffic over all 3

What distro? Are you using NetworkManager? nmcli con show enp1s0 | grep 'ipv4.route-metric' nmcli con show wlp1s0 | grep 'ipv4.route-metric' Where enp1s0 and wlp1s0 are yourinterface names. Lower number gets the priority. You can set this by.. nmcli con mod enp1s0 ipv4.route-metric 5 nmcli...

Removing and reinserting USB stick makes file 0 byte

Are you using the "eject" button. Things don't get written to disk immediately all the time. It may say it's done. But that doesn't mean it really is. Eject or "sync" forces the data to be written to the disk before you unmount or eject it.

Manager for VMs what do you use?

qemu/kvm/libvirt Only dislike - it puts the VMs on a different subnet than your host. You can ssh and scp to them from your host, but not from any other computers on your local lan. If you need them to be on local subnet, use virtualBox.

    UEFI no boot options

That is a problem, you will likely need to re-create the partition table and format. Fedora tries to boot into EFI first, if it finds a efi hook it will boot into efi mode. The anaconda installer automatically knows whether it is efi or legacy BIOS. If it doesn't find a efi hook, it will load...

Linux: A solo developer is attempting to clean up 30 years of mess

Back in the old days we had Commodore 64's, they had the OS in the ROM. The whole system only had 64k of RAM and an 8 bit CPU. But there was no wait. The OS was loaded immediately when you turned the computer on. :D The down-side was... you couldn't update the OS. But hackers couldn't...

Set directory permission for a mounted SD disk

chown -R user:user /doodisk You will have to do this as root, if root already owns it. All users are in their own group. So user:user means myself and my group.

Linux: A solo developer is attempting to clean up 30 years of mess

Does anyone know how many hundreds of developers work on the Linux kernel currently? Then think of all the thousands of packages that depend of the kernel and it's libraries. It would take a hundred years for a single person to re-write all of that. Probably true, but I have heard this dozens...

Set directory permission for a mounted SD disk

By default linux has "full" permssion on directories. This can be over-ridden. To make a mount read only in fstab... /dev/disk/by-uuid/68271755-703c-48e6-a935-c1237de6b1a8 /mnt/HDD01 auto ro,nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 use the "ro" (read-only) flag. But it's all or none, not by user.

Which Linux distribution do you use?

At work, mostly Redhat. At home, mostly Fedora. I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner, or for a gamer. But for someone who likes to play with "up and coming" or the "latest and greatest" especially in the enterprise server realm. It's hard to beat. You can subscribe to Fedora support now...

Unable to boot after power outage

If it was me, I would from the USB. Open up a terminal. Sudo or su to root. run fdisk -l to see which disk is which. Most likely the disk you boot from will be /dev/sda ( your USB stick ) And your computer disk will be /dev/sdb But fdisk -l will show you the sizes, so it will easy to tell...

    The log4j vulnerability

True, but people keep using Windows.. :) I think the main thing with Java is code portability. The same code runs on Windows, Unix, Linux,,Mac whatever. I don't think you can say that about any other language.

    AWS moves to Fedora

Really it's closer to 18 months. But I think because CentOS went to stream, rather than tradtional upgrades is why a lot of people are staying away from CentOS these days. I used to work for one of the 5 largest banks in the US, and also one of the 4 largest cell phone providers in the US, we...
