Based on Debian rather than Ubuntu linux Mint ..do they mean leans more towards ancestor Debian back up the tree , rather than just being a derivative of a derivative ?

Greetings and welcome.
I'm sure you will get the help you need at this forum.
I have an ASUS netbook that I put Linux Mint Mate on. It is a low powered laptop with 4 mb ram. Mine is VivoBook X510QA_F510QA.
It is not very old so I'm not sure if it all applies to your situation. It runs LibreOffice very well. It does well with the terminal and text editors xed, vi and emacs.
I have begun trying my hand at learning how to program in C. This cp works very well so far in doing that.
Hope this helps.

The quote from reddit is not exactly correct. I've used Mint before, and it follows the Ubuntu code base, however the customization of Ubuntu that results in Mint uses the Debian philosophy of focusing more on free software. And, like Debian, allows the user to pursue some less than free software, if they so choose. In my opinion, it's very easy for Mint to end up looking more Ubuntu than Debian.

But, they're all just cousins of each other ;)
