Hi everyone, it is probably a stupid question to ask, however, this is what I concluded after several years of using many Linux distributions. Since my very positive experience with an ubuntu 16.04 used on my laptop and the very stable "Debian 8" machines we used in the university, my experience with other distros was very bad on my desktop machine. In fact, I have tried the following Linux distributions: Ubuntu 17 and ubuntu 18 and also two weeks ago ubuntu 20 (all with a gnome desktop environment ). I also tried elementary OS and Opensuse Leap 15.1 on KDE PLASMA. The problem, I strongly believe, is not related to the OS itself, it is with my machine, and I failed to diagnose properly the problem but I also strongly think that it is due to my Nvidia card. I have an NVIDIA GeForce 210, which is I think one of the worst graphic cards you can have nowadays. I use a Dell OptiPlex 3020 - MT - Core i3 4130 3.40 GHz - 4 GB - 500 GB.

And these are the software that I use generally (and they failed me very often lately ... like Matlab for example ...) :

- Web Browser: Firefox
- Cloud Storage: Tresorit
- Scientific Computing Softwares: Matlab 2015a, Mathematica 12 and sometimes Julia with Jupyter
- Graphics and Video Editing Softwares :
- Synfig
- Kdenlive
- Natron
- Inkscape
- Gimp
- Blender
- Handbrake

- Audio and other software :
- VLC
- Audacity
- Deluge
- CopyQ

Does anyone have a recommendation (although I know that the specs differ from a machine to another) but I'm telling you that if I wasn't desperate I wouldn't write these lines.

Thank you !

Nvidia and Linux is a bad combination imo.

According to this link you have proccesor graphics so I'd use that.

Does anyone have a recommendation

With the specs you've listed and only having 4.0GB memory I'd suggest Linux Mint 19.3 Xfce as it doesn't require many resources.

it is probably a stupid question to ask,

It is not a stupid question, but very common. :)

G'day @Hamza147 and welcome to linux.org :)

I did a quick Google on

linux distro friendly NVIDIA GeForce 210

which also led to

Which Linux distro works best with Nvidia?

and they have a number of interesting thoughts, including sticking with LTS (long term support) distros.

Manjaro might be worth a look, too. It is a rolling release so its drivers are updated and expanded upon more frequently.

In the Debian-based distros, including Ubuntu and Linux Mint, there is usually a facility for Additional Drivers, which will include the Nouveau generic driver, which was built by the Linux Community with some grudging help from Nvidia staff.

Have some USB sticks? Try some more and see.

Cheers

I suggest try Q4OS https://www.q4os.org/index.html which I've been playing with for like 3 months or so now and really like it; pretty fast, friendly on resources - it's installed in a USB and running in a hp notebook with only 2GB RAM, CPU is an AMD E-300 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 1300Mhz, I'm writing this from it - and so far haven't had a single issue. It's based on Debian Buster and comes in two flavours; TDE and KDE, I'm using the one with KDE.

Thank you, I will try MANJARO. Thank you.

This seems pretty interesting I will try this one also. Does it support the software I've mentioned before (especially the video editing stuff ). And also for matlab the OPENGL rendering for the plots is very annoying. So, I have always to try a lot of workaround to get them right. Anyway, thanks for the quick response

Can't tell for sure cause I don't use any of those programs but
1. Tresorit does works on Ubuntu which I guess you install via a .deb file so it should work since Q4OS is a Debian based distro.
2 Synfig offers an appimage which you can use in any distro.
3 Natron is the one you have to try since you have to build from source but if it worked for you on Ubuntu I think it should work on Debian as well.
The rest of them are available from the repos so you can easily install them. I do know it supports Nvidia GPUs and actually asks you to install upon detection on first boot. I know cause I installed it a few days ago on a friend's computer and the process was fairly easy.

I appreciate your support and recommendations. I have installed LINUXMINT without the Nvidia drivers and it is giving me the smooth feeling I need without interruptions and using the software I've already mentioned.

Good job! Yes, nouveau drivers do a good job with many nVidia cards. Glad for your success!
