Hello all. I am very new to Linux. I started my Google IT certificate and came across Linux in a VM lab. I am really intrigued with this OS! I remember using dos back in the day, and it kind of reminded me of that. I used to even use dosprompt in windows, because I liked the feel of being able to hit the backside of my pc without a gui. I am hoping that this all means that Linux is for me! My name is MDosk and I am ready to learn!

Hello MDosk,

Welcome to Linux.org.

A good read.
http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

Get your feet wet.

I recommend downloading Linux Mint 19.1 and test drive it as per this link.
The link is for Linux Mint 18.3 although it works for Linux Mint 19.1 also.

You don't list your systems specs so don't know which Linux Mint 19.1 version will work best.

Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon if you have a high powered computer.

Linux Mint 19.1 Mate or Xfce if you have a low powered computer.

Read as many times as needed.

I do have a windows 7 machine. Right now I mostly work on my chromebook for learning. I have Linux installed on my chrome machine, and it is just "bash" I am guessing. I figured it is a start until I can get my own VM box installed on my windows pc. It is mighty old, but it is a quadcore 64 bit system. I don't recall the specs off the top of my head, but I used it for hardcore gaming, before gaming was a 'thing.' So maybe 7 years old or so, the ram and gpu have been updated more recently. Sorry if I sound like an idiot. I have been out of the computing field for a very long time. Thank you for the info on where to start!

If you understand source code and are already using bash then perhaps Arch Linux or OpenSuse Linux may be worth looking at.
I like a user interface / GUI.
I copy and paste source code when I use a CLI.

I'm using a desktop from 2006 E6400 Core 2 Duo Processor and 4.0 GB DDR2 Memory with an Nvidia Geforce 7300 LE and running Xubuntu 18.04 LTS (64 Bit) without any issues.

Old desktop computers and Linux work well together from my experience.

Oh by the way you do not sound like an idiot. ;)

I like anything based on Ubuntu because it doesn't make me feel like a idiot.

Debian 9 made me feel like a fool after I found out in the last two months that stable means chaos and testing means reliable. Older versions of browsers and games like 0 A.D.

I am using a Debian 10 (testing) based distro at this moment. Very nice!
