I first downloaded Linux Mint (Cinnamon), and when it shows up in my files, it appears as a DVD Drive. I cant, or don't know how, to create my bootable USB drive from this. I've tried Rufus, then Etcher. No progress. I downloaded Linux Mint (Mate), same thing. So I went for Ubuntu Mate. Also the same thing. It all shows up as a DVD Drive on my laptop. I tried different Linux Mint mirrors too that were in my country. It's an ASUS VivoBook. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

use UNETBOOTIN
(only because I am familiar with it)

download it.

Open it...it will look like....

Click on Diskimage......then on the three little dots on the right hand side of the page.......click on the download of Linux....the location of it will then be shown in the white box..(the program will now know where to locate it)

on the bottom line, usb drive is already selected......the Drive you MUST choose carefully (otherwise you will wipe another drive on your pc)...just make double sure).....

Click on ok. Have a cup of coffee. Relax. It may take 10 minutes...maybe less

Then....reboot your pc and you will need to set the usb as the drive to Boot from...Could be a good idea to sort this out before you start...so that you know what to do when you get to that stage

Once you have Linux up and running...play with it as much as you like...you will not break it......click everywhere !!

If you do happen to break it, just reboot, and start again

Running from a usb, Linux will be a bit slower than if it was installed.

Questions ?...Come back here.

Thanks for helping. Here is where I am lost. I don't know what to do from here. I cant find a vid or instructions on this. That's what my download looks like in my files, in the blue line.

have you followed the instructions above?....do you have unetbootin downloaded?

have you clicked on the three little dots across the page from disc image and iso...? select the file you are showing above

I hope I am making sense to you

I cant choose the DVD Drive as a whole, it seems I have to choose one of its files on the right. I tried the Grub earlier and didn't have any luck.

right click on it and save to desktop

I followed your instuctions but I cant choose the DVD Drive as a whole. It seems I have to pick one of the files on the right. Tried Grub. No luck. Opened the Isolinux one but no clue what to do from there. Right clicked the DVD Drive but I don't have the option to save it to the Desktop

do you already have the downloaded linux file on a dvd ?.....(this may seem like a crazy question....just bare with me )

No. All I did was download the mirror off the site, and that's what shows up in my files. "DVD Drive Linux Mint 19.1"

ok, then you need to select 'disk image' in unetbootin.......the click on the three little dots, and select that 'DVD Drive Linux Mint 19.1' to be put on a fresh dvd disc

Or...instead of using the three little dots...you can always type the file name into the blank box next to the dots

Unfortunately I don't have a disk drive on my Laptop. I typed the files name exactly in the box and it said it couldn't locate the file. Ill have to try something else. Weird I only get it as a DVD Drive. I didn't see other people in their videos have this issue. Thanks for the help though.

Just to be sure we are on the same page.....

The idea here is ::
Download an approx 2 gb file of Linux Mint.

Save it to either your desktop or to your downloads folder

open "unetbootin" and click on "disk image"....then go straight across the page from that to either the blank space (here you type in the exact name of the Linux Mint file), ...or just go a tiny bit further and you will see three dots...click on them and locate the Linux file...Select it and click on open...and its name will fill the blank space next to the dots.
What you have just done is select the Linux file which you downloaded.

Plug in your USB stick

CHECK that the drive selected at the bottom of the unetbootin window is in fact the PROPER NAME of your usb stck. Check AGAIN....and AGAIN

Click on OK....get coffee....relax

Unfortunately I don't have a disk drive on my Laptop.....Neither do I....it is not,necessary....you are using a usb stick

If you right click on the file and select properties...how big does it say the file is ?....hopefully approx 1.9Gb

I am holding my breath !!

Jesus. Im sorry for the trouble. I didn't save it and just kept running it. My bad. Thanks for the help. Im now booting it to my USB. Much appreciated.

my friend we ALL do **&&&(* things, which when looked back at either cause us to blush, smile, laugh, cry....or the whole bloody lot at once !!!!!! :):p:eek:

As you move on you WILL have dramas/questions

Bring em on.

Hi again. I have my Bootable USB ready, even made the attempt to load Linux in the boot menu, but Windows 10 Home loads up instead. I made the USB drive the #1 boot option, clicked it, even disabled Secure Boot so it wouldn't keep loading Windows. Nothing. The USB is properly formatted as far as I've checked. I even downloaded Syslinux because I was apparently lacking it. Used all three bootables, Etcher, Unetbootin and Rufus. No problems there though. Just getting Linux Mint to boot is my problem now. I made sure it was the right USB I clicked in the Boot Menu. I see something after opening the Boot menu, in the top left it says BIOS. I know what it means but there are three options there.

I'm wondering if Linux is one of them.

P.S
Should I start another thread on this subject, or is this okay?

No, that's fine @A.O . We can carry this Thread until you get a successful install.

G'day and welcome to linux.org :)

I am an Australian, as is Brian @Condobloke , he is 2 hours behind me, but should be along shortly.

Nope, they are to do with your laptop, is it a Chromebook or a Clevo, or other.

Let us know its brand name and model number if you will, and we can search the specs, unless you have them.

I'm just going to go pack to those pics you posted and blow them up a little so that old farts like me can see them easily, and I'll get back again a little later.

Cheers
