Hi
Ive been a mac os user for last 20 yrs. I recently stumbled upon linux in a magazine. i've tried down loading a few different versions and i've decided on manjaro. Mainly because it was free with the mag.
I like the privacy. not being watched all the time.
Any way i'm having trouble, i go to download open suze and i'm faced with 3 or 4 options direct link, metal link, pick mirror and checksum i've tried them all, and the quickest download was 6 days 23 hours. now i'm 57, time is precious. So i noticed aria2c . looked into that and as far as i can understand it all run on terminal or you need to know python ect.
What i'm trying to say is.
Is there somewhere a old fella can go and be eased into this new os.
The does and don'ts.
Best start up linux os to choose.
Must have beginners software.
Best place to learn linux, without having to pay.
I hate to say it but i nearly bought the book linux for dummies or something like that.
anyone with any useful advice i would appreciate it.
It seems the ethos of linux is its free which i love. But i don't seem able to get free help.
Probably its just me not looking in the right places.
In the long term i would like to think i could participate in some small way to be able to give something back to linuxAnyway any information or pointer would be appreciated

thanks
gary

...somewhere a old fella can go...

Old, schmold ;) look at my profile, I am 61 and the bloke above coyly describes himself as "mid-60s" (we have Members up to their 80s) - not sure if Tom is describing his age, or the era he enjoyed the most, either way?

G'day Gary and welcome to linux.org :)

Can't go wrong with a Linux Mint MATE (pron. "mar-tay") or a Linux Mint Cinnamon, Manjaro is good too.

1. Did you end up installing Manjaro?

2. Are you still running on a Mac and are you planning on dual-booting?

3. Give us the specs for your rig, eg mine is a Dell Inspiron 5770 Laptop, Motherboard Dell Inc. Model 0XH3XD , CPU Intel Core i7-8550U, RAM 16GB. The more you can give us, the better we can advise.

... but I nearly bought the book linux for dummies ...

Don't buy it, download it - https://www.iiitd.edu.in/~amarjeet/Files/SM2012/Linux Dummies 9th.pdf

459 pages of fun and games for when you have insomnia and break out the warm milk and cookies, but a seriously good read - I would use the TOC to selectively read parts that look relevant.

Gary when you get back here, I'll use your rig's brand or similar to re-name the Thread, other than that we will have every Tom, Dick and Harry in asking questions and you'll effectively get hijacked (Sorry Tom @poorguy and Dick @whazzupdoc for taking your names in vain) :D

Cheers

Gary,

Welcome to Linux.org - you couldn't have found a friendlier bunch here.

Take your time - you can hit your local staples or cvs even to grab a usb flash drive to load linux and give it a shot without changing out your laptop/pc.

Let us know when you're ready to dive in and we'll help you get started.

Rob
