New to Linux - Need Guidance

sorry... new to this community... post deleted... thank you for the guidance :)

Olds - you are on the horns of a dilemma here, friend :):(

1. If you are still operating from a USB stick (Live) without Persistence, any changes, any downloads or updates - these will vanish once you reboot. You will be back to square one.

2. If you install your current choice, and the mike does not work properly, then there is more work to do, which might include trying another Distro, can't say at this point.

Have a think about it, and if you wish to install, we can steer you.

Cheers and

Avagudweegend

Chris

BTW - another option is to remaster your USB stick, it will involve using a solution such as Unetbootin (downloadable for Windows, it is cross-platform), burning the Linux .iso onto the stick (reformatted), and choosing an option for Persistence size. I would suggest at least a 4GB stick, maybe 8GB, and you can choose Persistence up to 4GB (4096MB)

Thanks, I'll work with this tonight when I get home, Once I get in there, how can I test the mic?

Time to get ready for work :)

Just saw your post, Wiz. I do have persistence set, and am running on a 32 gig stick. IIRC, I did set the persistence at 4 gb. I will look at the other solutions tonight. Thanks for all your help.

Looked for information on how to test the mic. Found a lot of information on using the commands to do this. I also looked in the Software Manager for audio programs like a voice chat. I found a program called Audacity, which is supposed to be for recordings, I think. I am downloading it right now. It is running slow, but that is probably because it is in the live environment. I'm going to see if I can get the mic to work in this. I'll let you know,

Skype is also included on linux mint

WIRE can also be used

I saw a download for Discord for Linux. Might look at that.

I looked at how to install DIscord on Linux. I saw that the Discord site had a downloadable package, but I also saw instructions on how to install it from the command line in Mint. Would using the command line be the best way?

Thanks,

Olds

you should see this...
OCpnbFD.png

..... "get Discord for Linux'...click on the download now....deb....it will download ....you should see progress in the task bar....then follow the prompts to install the package.

You will find discord in the menu area......jut type in discord....

I have not tried Discord with Linux as of yet, but have been using Discord. It seems to work as well as any other voice for gaming I have used before.

Ok, I have Discord up and running on Linux. Working ok so far, except for very low mic volume...not sure how to fix that yet. Everything looks like it is turned up. May be something I missed.

As for the board, I am now having trouble with mouse lockups. I had a few of these with Linux, but now it is happening in Windows. I think the board is slowly going south...I have seen some times on Windows when the screen suddenly went black, then I got a gray fuzzy screen and had to reboot. I haven't seen this in Linux, yet...

Trying to resist urge to go shopping for new board and related parts....don't...know...how...much...longer...I...can...resist..!

just to save me re reading ....is this a tower pc ?....be wary of the price of a new board and whether your existing processor will suit...or not...etc etc...

Yes, this is a mid tower, full ATX, which I built. I have been building my own for some time now, this one about 4 years ago. Time for an upgrade...I play flight sims, such as IL2 1946 and IL2 Battle of Stalingrad. A nice upgrade will give my graphics a good boost, especially with a better video card, like an nVidia GTX1050 or better.

ask the question...maybe open a fresh topic......make sure the video card is supported

Update on DIscord. I tested it on Linux, and was not having any problems running it. However, the problem still persists on WIndows. Why, I don't know. It will run for a while, then I sound like a chipmunk...drivers, maybe? Still planning a new build in the near future.

well....it is windows, after all.....

Are you sure you were not Alvin in a previous life? (chipmunk), or Chip or Dale?

Don't you love the technical support around here?
