Initial 'treatment' of those souls new to Linux will either boost numbers for this site ...or sound the death knell.

Below quotes are from another help site (which shall remain nameless)

(from the opening poster) ""Ok this is way to complicated im going to buy myself a linux mint usb from osdisc.

(REPLY).....and another one bites the dust.....

No 'staying-power', some folks! Ah, dearie me....

(*shrug*)

In addition to the self serving/lackadaisical/cgaf attitude from the responder, the OP (opening poster) was simply allowed/encouraged to just walk out the door

His opening post was succinct...to the point.....and a later post (same day ) actually detailed what he wanted very clearly

.....and yet this guy.......who we would usually regard as a "walk up start" (presents very few problems as he actually knows what he wants)......was dithered around to the point where he pulled the plug and exited.

Please Linux org.......dont go down this path.

I can hazard a guess where you are talking about, bro' ... but we won't go there, lol :). Been there, done that, got a t-shirt on the way (not), and shown the exit door, didn't even get a chance to vote with my feet :p

BUT (you know Wizard always has a but)

Some of the major brands of Linux also have Fora (plural of Forum if you want to be pedantic ... I'm a pedant) where you can be treated like a leper if you choose to boot more than one, their, Linux. No names, no pack drills.

You and I have only been with this place, for 14 months and a few days. The hierarchical structure of Staff is simple:

Haven't really heard an unkind word out of any of them :)

No Advisors, No (after Mods) Global Moderators, No 2 x Admin, and then No Staff Emeritus between those two and the big big boss.

... and all focused on Linux (with a modicum of flirting with our FreeBSD and Unix aficionados)

If we are to be mindful of something, I would say that I for one find it very easy to refer to Windows as Windozey, or to Microsoft as M$ - but if it were not for them, and a few disgruntled/adventurous Mac OS folks ... well where would we be in numbers?

I usually do not come in on these sorts of issues until there are 5 or 6 players, and then dispense some Wizardly Wisdom (is that an oxymoron?), but I found it hard to resist.

The above is about 6 paragraphs too long to say I do not believe that linux.org will go down that bad track, but we must be ever vigilant.

Cheers all and avagudweegend.

Enjoy your Linux

I think @Rob has a pretty good formula for this site... well stated in the About Us at the bottom of each page: "Linux.org is a friendly community where you won't be berated for asking questions. We're all here to learn and help solve Linux issues. Some of us novice, others experts."

That's what makes it enjoyable to be here every day... it is a pleasure both to teach and to learn from others. It's not a perfect world and we can't be all things to all people, but overall there are a lot of talented and fun people here engaging others all around the world with politeness and civility, and doing the best we can to help find solutions to problems.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, Brian... I hope we never lose sight of these ideals and that we can continue to have fun and help people for many long years to come.

Cheers

I think we're pretty friendly - my biggest issue is getting time to be on here more lately! :)
As a newbie to the sight, i enjoy the information that is imparted to the masses. It will be a while before I can even get close to the knowledge the trio bring to the forum. Keep it simple as you are doing and it will be fine.

No not doing it right at all - there's an Aussie here who never sleeps :D:D Okay yes doing right as peeps here try to help and there is little of the nastiness that other forums have (well some have). I have not seen any here

Hahaha, big Lol, Ryan. :p

Speaking of "I never sleep" - that is the credo for one Thee Mahn, who is the Developer for Ultimate Edition. I have been using UE since 3.5 and find it quite entertaining. Mostly focused on KDE but occasionally diverges into a different DE.

The only problem you have to watch out for with them is that probably more than half do not install under UEFI, so you have to go to CSM aka Legacy.

It will be a while before I can even get close to the knowledge the trio bring to the forum.

None of us started as experts, Hansel, and if we are honest, none of us is yet :) There is SO much to learn. But the journey to knowledge starts with a few small steps, and I expect you have already taken some of those steps? Always feel free to share with us ;)

Happily, I have yet to see this type of treatment of newbies here:cool::cool:. Please let us keep it that way!

Yep! Always something new on the horizon! That is half the fun.? I may not be able to assist, but I always try to encourage newbies. After all, we were all there at one time, right?;)

Happy Trails,
Paul

Okay the best thing about being here is that we are all friendly and everyone really tries to help others and I've not seen any nastiness on here. We might have different approaches to things, but that is about all. My experiences of other places has meant that in all honesty I don't use them any more, unless I get stupid and think I'll have another go and regret doing so. I really hope this never changes here and it will only do so if we make it happen and that will signal the end of this and it becoming yet another "fan boy " forum - not one for everyone
