10+ yrd old desktop with xp

Haha (& I mean that in the nicest possible way) - you are getting the good ones, aren't you? ;)

That motherboard has support for 4 x USB slots ... do you have USB connections?

You can try to open the CD tray using a paper clip on the small eject hole on the CD-ROM unit. Although being that old you may find some CD read errors when using it.

have donloaded xenialpuppy to my laptop, but need to burn to my usb stick or to a cd. have found a cd drive and installed on desktop

got a linux version on a usb thats working on the desktop but still need the ram to speed things up

That's to be expected, I guess, John. Still, you are gaining experience, yeah? :)

Good thing about a USB stick is you can re-use it, it doesn't become a coaster. So you could try another Pup such as Lucid, or else you can stick with the sluggish Xenial and get a taste for whether you like it, and then perhaps get more RAM.

Xenial Puppy will have access to the Repositories (repos are like a warehouse for application packages) of Ubuntu 16.04 'Xenial Xerus', and that in itself will account for them wanting a bit of memory to run, install, whatever.

So the choices are yours :p

BTW what burning solution did you use for the Pup?

is it worth trying a ddr3 from a laptop?

Hi John. No, DDR3 will not work. Go back to page 1 of this thread and review post #19. If I am not mistaken on your exact motherboard, I gave you details on what kind, and how much RAM your system can use. Sorry, but you must match the specs of your system or it won't work.

(Wizard appears in a puff of smoke, non-smokers cough and look daggers, smokers inhale... Wizard grumbles Stan beat him to it) :D

Gotta hand it to Stan, he knows his stuff. :)

Looking pretty promising, John.

I have this, for your motherboard (aka mobo)

https://www.cnet.com/products/msi-ms-6390-motherboard-micro-atx-socket-a-km266/specs/

... could be worth copying and pasting into a text file to keep if you stay with this unit?

So you've got an MSI VIA ProSavage KM266 chipset, and it may be a KM266-8235 or a KM266-8237, which might influence whether it supports 32-bit or 64-bit architecture (even though your XP might have been 32-bit, it may not exclude 64-bit).

I am sure there is a website for this but for the life of me I cannot find it, yet.

If you wish to find out the answer to 32-bit or 64-bit, you could try one of the following:

  1. Installed on XP - msinfo32 - Go to Start - Run - type in and enter msinfo32.exe ... this will reveal a whole lot of info on your system, and under System Type - System Summary - it may include the info
  2. Free Download - piriform speccy https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download - very verbose (wordy), may have eg "64-bit ready". You can save the results to a web page and link to that if anyone asks
  3. Free Download - Belarc Advisor - http://www.belarc.com/products_belarc_advisor - I used to use this when I was using XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. You can save the report as an .html file and store it for later.
  4. Freeware - CPU-Z - https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html - well recommended
Take your time, digest this (take an antacid) - ask any questions.

On the wife - Note that She Whom Must Be Obeyed always comes first, if you know which side your bread is buttered on. Find something to sell her on - my wife likes the Solitaire, the wallpapers, and some surfing, and knowing that our online banking is more secure.

Cheers

"She who must be obeyed, Eh? So, Wiz you're a Rumpole fan!

John,
I have an older Emachine sitting off to the side here, Celeron D330 (2.88GHZ, 533Mhz FSB) came with Win XP Installed, 256MB of ram, and I maxed it out at 1GB, and the onboard video uses part of that. It will not even boot Mint Cinnamon, but Puppy, and Lite run just fine on it.
It will boot from usb, but you have to plug the stick in while it is running, then reboot and go into the bios to enable it to load from the usb stick. Somewhat of a pain, if you know what I mean. I wonder if your machine is the same way. Just thinking out loud, here:D.

Happy Trails,
Paul

P.S. Sorry, I forgot to say, welcome to our merry band of misfits.o_O

Interesting thought o_O

@VP9KS - Paul, that unit of yours might also work well with MX-17 and/or Peach OSI Bare Bones. MX-17 is Debian-based, ie no PPAs, and Peach is Ubuntu-based.

Cheers all
