Hi I'm just starting to learn about Linux. I'm thick as mince though, thought I was quite pc literate but turns out I'm not. I have no coding experience and am struggling with Linux. This is after donkeys years as a windows user. I've came to the conclusion that I don't like the way windows takes over my laptop and crams it full of stuff I don't want. I'm hoping to find answers and help on this forum. So I'll probably spend the next few weeks going through the site looking for help

Hi @msocsci, and welcome! We all had to start somewhere, and we know it can be a little daunting at first to get going with Linux. But we will help you along the way as much as we can. You will spend most of your time in a graphical desktop that doesn't look too much differrent from Windows, but don't be afraid of command line... folks who offer help will often provide some commands that you can copy and paste into a terminal to help get information or solve problems.

Cheers

@msocsci first up, welcome :D

My comments are interspersed between yours.

Hi I'm just starting to learn about Linux.

So am I and I have been doing it for 3 years, lol.

I'm thick as mince though,

I have eight (8) mental disorders, beat that ;). Better still ... don't.

...thought I was quite pc literate but turns out I'm not.

You should fit right in

I have no coding experience and am struggling with Linux.

Nor I, and the struggles get less as time goes by.

This is after donkeys years as a windows user.

Many of us to swap notes with. I was braying with them for nearly 25 years.

I've came to the conclusion that I don't like the way windows takes over my laptop and crams it full of stuff I don't want.

And I've come to the conclusion already that you are already on the road to wisdom, lol.

I'm hoping to find answers and help on this forum.

I/we hope so too.

So I'll probably spend the next few weeks going through the site looking for help

I've been here only since 1st May and I have barely scratched the surface of the gems and pearls that can be found here. So if you don't find an answer to what you are seeking within an arbitrary period of time only you can tell ... ask? The question may not have been asked, yet.

I would like to see the guy or gal whom coined the phrase "The only dumb questions are those which remain unasked" rewarded with a royalty for every time I use it, let alone others. But I'm broke.

Enjoy Linux, I do every day.

Welcome to the forum, msocsci! Don't worry, most of us are in the same boat as you, but this site has some really knowledgeable, helpful, friendly people here. Enjoy!

Oh, Yeah, we are all on the learning curve somewhere. :p Sometimes lost for a short time, sometimes found, but we are having fun learning, and that is what is important:). Welcome to the group, mate.

Happy Trails
Paul
