I am installing mint19.3 right now and I am in update manager installing the listed "upgrades" there are alot, I hit apply changes, but they say in the new version column "ubuntu" is this okay? also not sure what to choose in the "system snapshot" choice, thank you

thank you, i went to timeshift and see a check under timeshift wizard and a no snapshots available, it seemed to automatically check the RSYNC on snapshot type i havent hit OK yet, do not know which i need the BTRFS or RSYNC, should I hit restart or finish on all the first steps? thank you

but they say in the new version column "ubuntu" is this okay?
Yes. Linux Mint gets a lot (most?) of it's software base from the Ubuntu software repositories.

also not sure what to choose in the "system snapshot" choice, thank you
A system snapshot is akin to the 'System Restore' of Windows.
It is a very good idea to create a system snapshot prior to installing updates - especially major updates, system upgrades, or kernel updates.

If you are not familiar with 'Timeshift' this thread will be useful:

thank you and oops, did the updates first, still saying no snaps available should I restart and thanks all for the assistance i hit create snapshot it says synching files w rsync

thanks vrai for the link, any recommendation for the snapshot time intervals, i will not have vital files or work data that needs to be saved, just the similar system restore-type option and should I re run updates now that I installed snapshots, I did get a system error after it ran?

still saying no snaps available
Do you mean "snapshots" or "snaps"? I'm guessing snapshots. Snapshots will not be available until you actually create them. On a fresh install of the OS it is not that big of a deal - especially if on the 'first run' setup stage.

should I restart
Many updates to a Linux system do not require a restart but for major updates or if there are a great many updated packages it would be a good idea to restart.

Continue running the Update Manager until there are no additional updates to install. Then run Timeshift and create a "Snapshot". In the future that snapshot can be used to restore your machine to a working state if things go 'wonk'.

any recommendation for the snapshot time intervals
I have mine set to 'Manual'. But I also have my 'Update Manager' set to manual. I generally create a Snapshot before making any system changes or installing updates. Or whenever @wizardfromoz reminds me why it is a good idea to use Timeshift :)

I re run updates now that I installed snapshots, I did get a system error after it ran?
Installing Timeshift is not the same as restoring a snapshot. Creating a snapshot is really just a copy of or sync of some system files and settings. Restoring from a snapshot is just copying those files back to the original state the system was in when the snapshot was created. Not really 'installing'.

I did get a system error after it ran?
If you get any errors which cause problems it is usually quite helpful to either copy the exact wording, copy paste, and/or screenshot it and post it.

P.S. It is a good practice to store Snapshots on a drive other than the system drive.

:) G'day @tracytexasnews and a belated welcome to linux.org

If you Google

itsfoss timeshift

you will get a number of guides to Timeshift, including the one from itsfoss.com itself

There is also one from the Linux Lite Manual here

https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/tutorials.html#timeshift

Otherwise you can ask any questions on Timeshift at my Thread here

https://www.linux.org/threads/timeshift-similar-solutions-safeguard-recover-your-linux.15241

... if you don't find the answer in the Thread itself

Cheers

thank you Mr.Wizard, I have been poking around threads learning some of the very basics and will check the threads you've provided. Much has changed, 3 years ago I attempted to load Ubuntu from a usb (unsuccessfully) and had no where to go for help! Crykey (sp)?!
