To Linux or Not to Linux? That is the question

Lubuntu will work without a doubt but it's not sexy. You might try Linux Lite, MX-Linux, or Manjaro if you want a light but fully featured distro.

    The Perfect Frankenstein Distro?

If you could cobble together the best parts of existing disparate Linux distros, what it look like? First, what would your base distro be? Second, what parts would you steal from other distros? For example, would you use OpenSUSE as a base and add Arch features? Or would you start with KDE...

    Linux Daydreaming

In hindsight, the whole daydream may have been my creative side creating a reason to come up with fun team names. But I certainly would love to see Linux gain a much larger % of the desktop market. And some distro team ups would be really cnl too.

    Linux Daydreaming

I confess, my daydream is too vague to satisfy your questions. I'm sure a real tournament would be fleshed out with more nuanced and meaningful requirements. However, for fun I will try to address a few points. 1. When I mentioned manufacturers, I had companies like Dell, HP, Acer, and ASUS...

    Linux Daydreaming

Don't get me wrong. My fantasy has 1 distro being touted by a group of manufacturers. But by NO MEANS do I want all other distros to go away (not that that would even be possible). However, if 1 single GNU/Linux distribution was marked and embraced by 5% of the market, I believe all other...

    Linux Daydreaming

First of all, it is VERY cool to be speaking with the creator of GeckoLinux! Thank you for what you do. Second, I struggled a bit to find a great dance partner for GL in my fantasy. I wanted to pair it with another well known distro that also uses RPM package mgmt. OpenSUSE obviously fits...

    Linux Daydreaming

Fair point. You might say that Windows has learned some lessons from Linux (and other OS) and now the current iteration is more secure than it has been historically.

    Linux Daydreaming

You are not completely wrong, but I disagree. #1 - If my fantasy came true, Windows, Mac OS, and Chrome OS wouldn't disappear. Linux would merely gain a lot more marketshare...let's say 25% just for fun. #2 - If a Linux distro were mass marketed it would have issues but not the same as Windows...

Thanks. It's fun to muse about the possibilities. Fyi, I modified my original post to make it a little more fun.

    Linux Daydreaming

Sometimes I daydream about when we might see the fabled "Year of the Linux Desktop". It may happen one day but I think fragmentation (as beautiful as it is) has stymied the critical mass necessary to reach it. So, I have this fantasy where a group of computer manufacturers decide to bring about...

    BlackArch, Kali, Parrot or Tails???

Very cool. Thx. And, yes, I use my firewall even though I've read that some think it is unnecessary for the average home user.

    BlackArch, Kali, Parrot or Tails???

That would be fun if only I had the time brother. These distros all look like overkill for my casual needs but I wouldn't mind using a distro that offered additional layers of security and privacy out of the box.

    BlackArch, Kali, Parrot or Tails???

Anyone have thoughts on the pros & cons of these "security" distros?

    Xfce Popularity

Maybe I'm reading Distrowatch incorrectly but it appears more distros (intended for desktop use) offer Xfce as an optional desktop environment than any other. Gnome and KDE round out the top 3.
