This is the second computer that I have had Linux installed on. The first one was a old one back in 2017. This one was donated to me from PCs for people. Been with Linux for 6 years now.

Why is it that the update manager says my system is up to date but when I do a refresh is shows updates available. I am using Linux Mint 20.2 and Duke University for the libraries.

I use the update manager. It also sometimes happens with updating Chromium. It appears to happen with these WEB browsers as other updates go rather quickly. I also have fast speed internet with Spectrum. I use the repository that is closets to my location.

The update to Firefox 123.0 (64-bit) on Linux Mint 20.2 took a very long time. I have noticed this occurs for every Firefox update. Can anything be done to improve this?

Well after coming over to Linux Mint I have found everything I need (with the exception of two graphic programs witch I have on wine) can be obtained with the software manager. Those apps are also monitored and when a new version becomes available the update manager lets me know it is available...
I like to be in control of what is on my machine and find that Linux fits that to a tee. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I switched from Microsoft and will never go back. I do like making .gif avatars.

I got to jump in it is Linux Mint for me. My suggestion however is to look at a few YouTube videos on the various distros and then give it a try. The nice thing is before you decide to install you can run off the thumb drive or disk. You however will not be able to download any apps using that...
I tried Clam but found even though it said a update was available there was no easy way to obtain it. I also find that with Linux it was not really necessary to have it.
