    Copy-on-write error correcting file systems

I have been using BTRFS RAID 1 for data and meta-data with two hard disk drives for a while now. This set up is on my network storage server. My desktops simply runs ext4 (not a fan of LVM yet). I am using two 1TB HDD totalling 1TB capacity (no surprises as using RAID 1); if I was to add...

    Log monitoring software

Thanks, I love webmin. Couldn't live without it. Have it on all my command line servers. Sometimes it is nice to have a GUI to configure things. Even works on raspberry pi 3.

That's the key quote here. Being many releases behind, it is much more likely things will go wrong.

Upgrade Google Chrome on Ubuntu 12.04

Yes, although I have not actually used 16.04 yet. Still milking the 14.04 LTS release.

    Log monitoring software

Perhaps related to this thread on securing Linux, I have noticed an advertisement on here regarding log monitoring software. It can be time consuming and somewhat difficult to review system logs, so is there any decent applications out there anyone uses to monitoring everything from system logs...

Upgrade Google Chrome on Ubuntu 12.04

Upgrading to 14.04 would be the best option. Just to add here, Chrome now longer updated in Windows Visa and before.

    help

That's the main reason I only use the LTS versions. Perhaps a back-up and full reinstall would be the best option here. But given that system installation can be complex (even though more simplified) it would be easier if Ellen found someone locally or at work that knows a bit about Linux. Or...

Create ssh keys for more secure logins

Thanks for reminding me. I have set this up on my raspberry pi and will do so on my NAS tomorrow. Not only more secure but faster log-ins. By the way, I had to use 700 for it to work. With 600, permission is denied when I try to login.

Using mysqldumpslow to read the mysql slow query log

Excellent tip. I am assuming if there is no 'mysql-slow.log' file this is because there has been no slow queries?

What are you guys using for firewalls at home?

I too am interested in setting up a home firewall. I am considering pfsense and untangle. Been watching YouTube videos on both. Untangle seems to be easier to use with few advanced options. I will try untangle first seem as though you have had no problems with it. I plan to put onto a cheap...

What is your Daily ride Distro wise???

Lubuntu LTS for my laptop and Ubuntu server LTS for my server. I use various other Linux distros for my projects but mostly prefer the debian/ubuntu systems.

    help

Likely because those downloads are for Windows only. You'll know because they end is .exe. To use the latest versions of web browsers you should upgrade. With Linux this is easy. Before doing so back-up any important data. Type these into the terminal: Hold down: Ctrl + Alt + T Then in the...

I have posted a contrasting desktop. I like to work with a busy desktop. I am running Lubuntu 14.04 LTS Desktop.

    Rasperry Pi 3 projects

An important part of my Linux arsenal is my Raspberry Pi running Raspbian. I am seeking ideas for future projects to do on my pi. Currently, I use the pi for these tasks: PHP / Apache / MySQL (test websites, development) FreeRADIUS (username / passwords to access my wifi) Mantis bug tracking...
