What " or used when running gpm directly" does mean?
First up, are you sure you are not confusing "file" and "folder"? /etc/conf.d is a folder, ie /etc/conf.d/*.*

I think Brian has got this one... you have to boot the DVD! Looking at the contents will not show you an install file, like with Windows...
