I downloaded kali linux and made sure all was formatted and kali was burned to my usb
Is kali a ubuntu based distro?

Kali Linux is based on Debian but it may have some Ubuntu pkgs.

Yes- And yes this is a permanent fix.
Now type this at the prompt:
set prefix=(hd0,gpt1)/boot/grub
Now type this:
set root =(hd0,gpt1) and press Enter.
Than a few more things to type. Let me know when your ready.
now type:
insmod normal and press Enter. Than type normal again and press Enter.
Let me know when your done so I can tell you the next thing to type.
Next type:
insmod linux and press Enter. Than type:
* linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda ro
