I'm trying out Fedora 31 Workstation but Rhythmbox doesn't show or play the music CD I have inserted. It just shows audio CD but I can't play or rip it.

Some video's don't play in Firefox or Chromium. I installed the H264 codec but that didn't fix that problem.

Didn't have these issues in Zorin or Solus.

Try vlc, and install all its audio code dependencies
I can't see vlc in the Fedora software center.

Update! I figured out I had to enable the RPM Fusion repo first and then install VLC. The video's then worked on sites like CNN and Facebook.

Another update! Enabling RPM Fusion for Fedora 31 - Free, can cause the system to do funny stuff. Like going into a hibernate state without that option being selected in the settings.

Fedora doesn't seem to be very popuilar among members of this forum. I'm starting to understand, it's a high maintanance distro. Interesting non the less.

fedora junky here. I like it, but it's not for everyone.

Some things are a little more difficult, some things are easier.

It seems every distro has it's idiosyncrasies.

I've never had rpmfusion put any of my systems in "hibernation mode".
But it's worth looking into.

Does anyone still watch anything on CNN?

Somethings I like about Fedora that are nuisance on some other distro's.

dnf update -y is only one command. Not two like apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade dist

There is no auto-rollback to the previous kernel version in many other distro's.
In Fedora I can always go back and select the previous version.

I can install just about any version of Java, from almost any source, it seems some distro's
have "canned" versions that only work with their distro.

dnf whatprovides libc.so.6 tells me what package installed this file (it works on any file)
I don't have to guess what package installed a file.

I would say I'm not the average user". I tend to run Linux on high-end servers.
I use NIC teaming, NIC bonding, ipmitool, ILO commands, clustered file systems, and even
Linux clustering in some cases, I use podman (rarely docker anymore). All these things come
with Fedora/Redhat but not many other distro's.

The kmod packages automatically update custom external drivers for me everytime I update my kernel
(think Radeon/nVidia). I don't have to do a complete re-install of the drivers everytime.

RPM's delta file are handy, instead of downloading an entire package to do an update,
I only download what has changed in that package. For one file, not that big of a deal,
but sometimes updates can include 100's of files.

I can work around many of these things on other distro's. (Linux is linux. eh?)
But sometimes.. it is a difficult nuisance.

VLC works, but you can also install the lame and gstreamer packages to make audio/video
work. But I agree that being a GUI desktop replacement for windows, is not Fedora/Redhat's
strongest point.

On Redhat 8.1 and and OracleUnbreakabale systems, I can do "live kernel updates". I can update
my kernel on the fly without rebooting.

I like Fedora too, it was just more trouble to make everything work compared to Zorin or Solus.

I watch CNN Money sometimes, especially Christine Romans, because she explaians diffucult things so even I can understand. I also needed the codec to play video's on Facebook. My mother has a account there to keep in contact with family all over the world.

Anyway, usually when I try out some new or improved distro I give up and return to Zorin, that keeps on working with no regression after every new release. Fedora keeps my attention even if it's not perfect or flawless.

Oh yeah, when Fedora 32 comes out in April or a little later should I upgrade? How have you ecpereince Fedora upgrades one version to the next? Do somethings break or is it worth the risk?

Yes, I just suspected I was missing one codec for some video's to play, but didn't know which one. That's why I installed VLC, that comes with all the relevant stuff. VLC worked on other distro's where the Gnome video player could not play DVD movies.

Oh yeah, I am very new to Fedora, just know Ubuntu and it's derivatives.

I featured out the firewall is enabled by using firewall-cmd --state and it showed active or something. So is it enabled by default? I'm used to just using gufw, with simple rules.

systemctl status -l firewalld - will show if it's running, normally it is by default

firewall-cmd --list-all-zones will show what zones you have, one of them should say (active).

firewall-cmd --zone=FedoraServer --add-service http --permanent is how I add services

if it's not a well known service, and only a port, I use this..

firewall-cmd --zone=FedoraServer --add-port 8080/tcp --permanent

I've been doing the "in-place" upgrades since 28. So far they've all worked OK for me.

This is a pretty good "how-to".

Thanks, that's very helpful. I can alternatively stay on Fedora 31 until October this year if I understand the 13 month maintanance updates correctly.

Bluetooth has a fairly short range. Do you any Bluetooth devices close to your computer?

Also usually, you have to turn on Bluetooth broadcast. On my cell phone for example, it says "Make phone discoverable by other devices". I have to turn it on, but even then, it only stays on for a minute or two. Once the device is "paired" it turns off the broadcast (usually).
