I tried ubuntu and i got black screen after an update. I was barely able to recorver windows bootloader. I tried kali, but it didn't boot and bootloader wasn't visible. I tried ubuntu again, no grub. And solution to solution to solution... didn't work. I once had problem and even most upvoted solutions didn't work and after 6 hours some random nonsense worked...

I need stable linux, which is anonymous at the same time for dual boot uefi alongside Windows 10. And if you could link me working guide how to install that that would be great Thanks !

Thing is thats why i don't like doing any update or even installing software unless i know what its doing.

To be honest kali was aimed at serious hackers not newcomers. The other thing is i think some are obsessive with updates. if your running some production server or something i could understand it , but if its a personal laptop then i would rather be using linux not updated a bit rather than Windows updated yesterday. (would be interesting to see who would disagree here on this site?)

First what is your PC system, hard drive size, single multiple and approach to Windows with Linux ?

The simplest set up is probably both distro on a single HD

I'm thinking 100mb efi partition at start, windows partitions, a swap partition , which might give some protection of any over writing by windows, in other words it should eat into swap and not linux install partition. Not sure thats true either, somebody will tell me .

If you want stable then i'm going to suggest Slackware. maybe others can give suggestion. Then you can go to https://distrotest.net/ to play. Maybe pick a couple then put their live version each onto a usb ; boot from that and see if they recogize hardware etc.

Slackware wtf is that, usable ram 256 mb ? Site looks like from another century. I want stable but also anonymous. I have no idea about this distro nothing found with combination anonymous. Can you recommend me some better distro, there are too many and i don't feel well currently to search for right distro long time.

I want linux on hdd other disk than my ssd - on which i have windows and bootloader should also reside on hdd. So if linux breaks, it won't damage my windows bootloader.

Anonymous? Not sure what you mean by that. Try this one https://www.q4os.org/downloads1.html pick the KDE version. Regarding the anonymous thing I guess you might install some vpn https://protonvpn.com/support/linux-vpn-tool/ or you could try tails "The Amnesic Incognito Live System" https://tails.boum.org/install/download/index.en.html
From their site
Tails is a live operating system that you can start on almost any computer from a USB stick or a DVD.
It aims at preserving your privacy and anonymity, and helps you to:
use the Internet anonymously and circumvent censorship;
all connections to the Internet are forced to go through the Tor network;
leave no trace on the computer you are using unless you ask it explicitly;
use state-of-the-art cryptographic tools to encrypt your files, emails and instant messaging.

Hope this helps! :)

Hi Empleat.

I have found Mint is a great distro for folks to get started with - the "standard" version with the Cinnamon desktop is really user-friendly. Has Grub as the bootloader, but have never had an issue installing alongside windows.

There's lots of documentation including an installation guide. Why not download the .iso for a Live CD/DVD and give it a whirl. The installer will run from the LiveCD too if you want to go ahead and make it a permanent fixture on your hard drive.

Hope you find a distro that works well for you.

@IPA
Welcome Empleat,
I would agree with everything that IPA has mentioned.
If you use Linux Mint 19.3 'live' iso, and boot from it, you can look at it, try everything on it, play with it: all without disturbing your Windows OS. That's the beauty of using a 'live' distro.
Then if you are comfortable with what you see, you can go ahead and install it.

Hey there! Personally, I have heavily researched distributions, as within the past month, I fully made the transition from Windows 10 to Linux.
After loading multiple OS's in VMware and personally loading them onto my USB drive, I can personally recommend Salient OS. By default, it uses the Xfce desktop environment. It is based off of Arch, and is very stable and personally works for me. If this doesn't work, the best absolute beginner Linux distribution imo is Pop!_Os, although it does eat your RAM.

Flavour-wise

If you're new to Linux and came from a MS Windows background then best distro is Linux Mint Cinnamon if you're more into the Windows XP look-a-like theme-set.

If you like the flavour of Windows95 then go for Linux Mint Mate
If you have an old machine go for Mint Xfce

The looks of Solus is a cross between Windows95 and WIndows10

Zorin is cross between windows 95 / 7 / windows10 and gnome2

Deepin is much like Windows7.

Fedora is like having a tablet on your puter using Gnome
Manjaro is a functional out of box distro with a make-over on Windows95/win2000

Linux is not windows but the flavours can be compared.

Slackware is one of the oldest linux.

If you have a machine that is low on resources you can go for one of the tradtional linux like:

Mint
Puppy
PopOS

Debian, Arch, Kali, slackware, Gentoo are for advanced users

whichever version you use:
Xfce and LXDE are light weight
KDE is windows-like with polished eye-candy

I'm gonna stay with my favourite Deepin because i was in love with Windows7 until it came to its end of life, I like the theme-set/flavour and didnt want to let go until i found the alternative Deepin.

So, when you choose a distro, there is two things to consider. How old your machine is and which flavour you want to go for.
