Hello All,
Hope this is the right place to post this.
I bought an Asus netbook a few weeks ago and dumped Win 10 and immediately installed Linux Mint 19.2 Tina.
Everything works fine except for one thing - the installed webcam. It does not show up in Devices, Computer or any place except Skype.

Here's the info on the machine:
VivoBook ASUS Laptop X510QA-F510QA
Kernel: 4.15.0-66-generic x86_64 bits
Desktop MATE 1.22.0

I don't remember how I got this info but it describes the webcam:
*-usb:2
description: Video
product: USB2.0 VGA UVC WebCam
vendor: Azurewave
physical id: 4
bus info: usb@1:1.4
version: 16.01
serial: 0x0001
capabilities: usb-2.00
configuration: driver=uvcvideo maxpower=500mA speed=480Mbit/s

If there is any info that I have left out, please let me know and I will poke around to find it.

Thanks in advance.
TC

Hi Charlie! The fact that Skype sees your webcam is a good sign. A webcam needs some kind of software to use it. Here's an article that should help to get you started. I can't recommend one over another as I don't use any of these programs myself... I put black tape over my webcam. (Call me paranoid! :eek:o_O)

Cheers

Who's paranoid, I just don't like any windows based products from accessing my cam so I just slapped a screw-on bottle cap and taped it in place. ;) Comes off when I desire to use it.

Thanks Paranoid, {just kidding!!!} I mean Atanere,
I will try these suggestions. I remember using 'Cheese' once a few years ago. Seems like it came with the distro at the time.

Hi Nik,
I was not thrilled when MS acquired Skype. I started looking around for a replacement with not much luck. I have a friend in Western Australia that I communicate with occasionally and Skype seems to work the best for us.
If you have a better option, I'm all ears.

Cheese was the only familiar name to me too. I think I once used it to make a computer profile pic, or avatar, or something. Long ago, though. So, it depends on your needs with all these choices... the best rated one may or may not be the best for you. I'm always glad to see options though.

I don't use Skype either, but you may find some options here, here, or here.

Cheers

I really may have the cat by the tail.....but your laptop has a usb 3 port as well as 2 usb 2 ports.

Have you tried changing ports ?

I know it works on skype for you, so it should work everywhere......humour me, change ports...

@70 Tango Charlie - The information you posted clearly states that it's a UVC webcam and UVC is well supported in Linux. So any graphical application that can use a webcam should be able to access/use it.

What do you mean it doesn't show up in devices? Where is it not showing up?

Have a crack at this as I am going over to it as well, already ditched Skype not long after MicroBloodySoft bought out the Estonians that created it and took it down the sh*tchute.
You can down load it for Unbuntu and Fedora and should you be running Linux Mint it should work there also as it is based on the Ubuntu Kernel.

Hi Jas,
It's not showing up in the Hardware section of the system settings.

A big thank you to everyone for your help! Problem solved.
I have downloaded the simple program 'Cheese', and it works just fine for what I need.
Thanks for all the links you have provided. They will go toward furthering my Linux education.
My philosophy is this: School is not education; it is mainly memorization. {Study what's in the book, memorize it, take the exam, receive diploma} Real education comes after you leave school; which is what I am getting right now.
Cheers!
