Howdy y'all, I'm just getting back into Linux after a 12 year absence and the new Ubuntu (18.04.2 LTS) is very cool. I'm trying to figure out how to make the top bar not be permanently translucent. With the background I'm using I have a hard time seeing the little white numbers, and I'd also like to change how the date/time are displayed. I tried looking through extensions in Ubuntu Software, but I couldn't for sure figure out which i should be getting to handle it. Thanks for any help y'all can give me.

I tried the dynamic option, I moved the slider but it didn't change the transparency. For the date/time, I meant for it to show differently in the top bar. I was able to navigate the changes to date and time, but not able to make it show the actual numerical date.
Do you have the Gnome shell extension installed?

For the date you should be able to change it to a numeric date only by right clicking on the date and from there you should get a drop down menu.

Welcome back to Linux! I also have been away from Linux for about 15 years. Ubuntu is a good choice. I have used Arch for many years and decided to use Manjaro. As you get into Linux again, you will see many great changes. You are at the right place. Linux.org is a resourceful place.

I'm using Gnome DE.
I have the Ubuntu dock (came with the ubuntu dl package), I don't have the ability to right click the date. It just brings up the calendar.
Mate this may be simpler.
Go to Settings - Details - Date & Time.
There you can add or lose the day of the week, show or not the seconds, number the weeks on the calendar &c.
Also in Settings Accessibility you can go Large Text which alters the top bar text size, but I haven't found how to change text colours yet, nor a reliable current source on translucency.
