I have been using MX Linux for a few days and find it to be the best Linux distro I have ever used.

With all the options it looks like a Swiss Army knife and works very well. You even have access to the testing repository in the easy to use MX package installer.

The only disadvantage is, their forum is not as pretty and easy to use than this forum.

MX-18 is an awesome Linux distro that comes with most everything installed OOTB.

Word to the Wise
as with any Debian based Linux distro don't install software outside of the MX repository.

Software from the MX repository is proven and tested to work although not the latest software it is usually bug free.

The Swiss Army Knife is an excellent description of MX Linux.

Thanks for your advice and feedback Poorguy!

I tried to install Debian 9 with the netinstaller before and could not. MX Linux is a great option for me because it was so easy to install.

I did install 0 A.D. from the testing repo but all went well, but I won't be making a habit of that because while using Debian based Q40S the whole system froze and I ended up with a "unrecognized file system" message.

It takes a while to find stuff in MX Linux, but a least it has everything I want.

I feel right at home, coming from a Ubuntu background and knowing commands when I need to use them.

I used Ubuntu vanilla before MX Linux but the dock was too unresponsive when put in auto-hide mode.

Everything just works in MX Linux and it's so much easier than Arch based distros.

You can find what you are looking for in Synaptic Package Manager.
Type in the search bar to find what you are looking for although it may take a few attempts depending how it's entered.

That because it's Debian and Debian is rock sold reliable.

Scan the MX forums as there is a wealth of good user information and solutions to problems or how to do things in MX Linux.

I use Antix Linux and whenever I have any problems with Antix Linux the first thing I do is to scan the Antix forums and there is usually a solution to the problem I'm having.

Yes, I was just referring to find general stuff in the menu and not software. I was using Ubuntu before this and lied the pretty pictures to find stuff.

The MX Linux package installer is just a little different than what I'm used too. Like it shows a program and then a data option and others underneath it. It just installed everything when I was not sure.

The MX forum is more difficult to navigate than this one.

I used Q40S in Februarie because I though that is was a easy way to install Debian Stable. It was not very stable and some of the old software caused freezes. Mx Linux compiled much better.

Yes the MX 18.3 manual comes with the manual right on the desktop.

I was just a little unsure of the selection of options available in the package manager.

Take Rhythmbox for example. You have the program itself and then underneath it a data option and doc option and so on. I figured out that the first option will install everything that's needed.

Very easy to use without much help, will just stick to the stable repository from here on.

Oh yeah, I remember now that the people involved with Antix also work on MX Linux.

THat is so. antiX is run by anticapitalista and they collaborated with members of the former Mepis Community to provide the MX-series.

I have been using MX since v14, and like Karl Malden (who?) wouldn't leave home without it.

Be aware that it is more closely linked to Debian than Ubuntu and Mint, and along with antiX and others of this nature including Debian itself, does not allow for the introduction of PPAs (Personal Package Archives).

Enjoy

Yes I found that it doesn't work with trying install 0 A.D. with back port instruction from the website didn't work. MX Linux has a stable and testing repository and found what I wanted in the testing repo that seems to be the same as the Debian back port repository. Lots of choice built in!

I also found the one toolbar, to the left(or where ever you want to place) for useful, unlike shiny Ubuntu with it two toolbars and candy shop icons.

It is also more snappy than even Lubuntu and the prettier Ubuntu or Zorin 15.

I prefer function over how it looks.

I don't know if there is a section for that in this forum, but you should consider a review section on the most common distros, Wizard. You know them better than many reviews that can be found on Google search.

Already working on it, but getting the time is a factor.

I made a commitment to Mark Greaves a few weeks ago to review his Peppermint 10, so I will be dealing with that first.

Soon, I hope :D

Good on ya mate!

About another matter. I use MX Linux now and was just about to update it, but my 3G network was too busy and I decided to do it later. Then I replied to a comment on the MX forum and saw a alert about not updating MX 17 or 18 at this point because of some kernel issue.

Maybe we can do that on this forum too and alert one another of "the ice scream is going to hit the fan" events.

Regardless of what distro your using. Just a thought.

A user should be proactive and check the forums daily for the distro being used so the user will then be aware of any red flag issues.

Takes but a few minutes do and a good way to stay informed of changes etc.

You are absolutely right Poorguy. I came across the alert about the latest MX Linux kernel issue while checking a reply on the forums.

So as the situation stands the MX Linux people advice to hold of updating until the problem is fixed.

The only problem is that I have just read a story about a zero-day vulnerability in Firefox that needs to be patched.

In my MX Linux update screen I see there are updates for Firefox and the 4.19 kernel.

How do I update just Firefox? I don't see the option to uncheck one update and just install Firefox like I was used to in Ubuntu based distros.

Will "sudo apt upgrade firefox" work?

Firefox is updated through updates so wait until the kernel issue gets solved over the next few days.

I wouldn't worry.

Are you running firejail.

If not go into synaptic and install firejail you should be ok diong that as it is an older version and already in the MX repository.

Thanks you very much Poorguy, I found firejail in the MX repo and will try it if my plan A doesn't work.

The security issue in Firefox is related to Javascript and will just disable it for now in "about:config" in Firefox and see if it still work.

Man I really wouldn't do all of that just use good browser habits.

Only go to known good safe porn sites. :p:D

The weakest link sits in the chair in front of the keyboard and monitor.

I mean I'm still using a core 2 duo e7400 and intel has no microcode update for any of the vulnerability's of recent.

(meltdown / spectre)
Microarchitectural Data Sampling (MDS)

All of these were probably around before anyone knew about them and besides MX devs will have the kernel problem patched in a few days.

Don't panic patience my friend. :)

Yes, you are right Poorguy, I was having a "this is not Kansas anymore" moment, being a real Tin man.

I just updated Firefox only in the MX Package manager and left the kernel update for later.

No need to go off to see the Wizard this time, no offense Wizard.

I can't change my alias to Tin Man? If that's possible you should change your forum name to Iron Man, Poorguy, you always keep your cool.
