When was your first touch of Linux?

3 months ago when I have started learning about debian and respbian

So, you jumped in at the deeper end? I started with Ubuntu in 2014 or so and I am back to Lubuntu 18.04. Debian is manageable, but I found it more trouble and work to set up.

I started with Ubuntu 10.04 which i thought and probably still think it was one of their best releases. I tinkered with Mandriva then. For the life of me i can't remember the version number. i completely stopped using Ubuntu when they started Unity desktop. I couldn't stand it. I learnt about cinnamon desktop maybe around Ubuntu 12.04 ish time. I discovered Mint Cinnamon and loved it straight away. During my distro hopping phase I tried LMDE. It was fine but i hated the fact that i couldnt remaster it like the *Untu distros. Come Pinguy Builder I stuck to mint until 18.3. I now use MX Linux and i dont think i will change to any distro unless an amazing one apppears.

I have used Zorin 9 since 2014 up until February this year and then decided to try something else.

I tried Q40S, Solus, Antergos, Manjaro, Zorin 15, Lubuntu and even Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

What am I using now? MX Linux and it just works, no more distro hopping for me. I hope it lasts at least a few years.(Antergos was great but the project ended.)

G'day @brolly and welcome to linux.org :)

If you get time, swing by https://www.linux.org/forums/member-introductions.141/ and meet a few more of The Gang!

I could not agree more about Unity. I came into Ubuntu at about the v11 time. Now I run 90 Distros, but I reckon the MX-series is worth its weight in gold as a starting point for just about anyone. :D

On DistroWatch's Page Hit Ranking it has basically led the pack for nearly 12 months, and currently, its figures for page hits (presumably with intent to download) are nearly the equal of Manjaro, Ubuntu and Mint combined.

... and its wallpapers are good, too.

Enjoy your Linux

Thanks @wizardfromoz I feel a massive weight off my shoulders since i finally decided to ditch Window$ again. Speaking of Distrowatch its pretty interesting how trends change. Ubuntu was king for sometime until Linux Mint took the crown for a significant period of time. Manjaro did a good job as well. I agree that MX Linux is good for starters. Ive learnt a lot about linux and I understand quite a lot of jargon and scripts. My skills with Window$ were moderate to advanced. I'd say i am on the lower end of moderate with Linux thanks to a lot of research + trial and error. I am keen to be on the advanced side of the spectrum with Linux. I will post in the member introduction section as you mentioned.

I think we are of like minds in a number of ways, Brolly :) (as are many of us here) - you may find you have found a good spot to "camp" and talk Linux.

I'll see you over at Intro's and we can gasbag more.

Enjoy your Linux ... I do, every day :p

I noticed an important alert on the MX forum to not upgrade MX 17 & 18 right now, something about the kernel.

Hold off until further notice from the MX website or forum.

Isn't there a way to backup your home folder and restore it in your fresh MX18 installation?

There is a MX tools utility which you can open from the MX Tools menu.

At the top you will find MX Snapshot, which you can use to create a bootable memory stick or DVD. I have not used this feature myself, so do a bit up reading up before you use this. I tried to find MX Snapshot in the users manual that comes with MX 18.3 but no luck yet.

Wait until the Wizard from OZ or Poorguy replies, they know more than me about this stuff. I only have an introductory knowledge on Linux.

Ive used this feature before it's like remastersys/pinguy builder. I have used it to clone a live iso of my installed system. I have not tried using it to transfer files to a fresh install i.e. MX 17 to 18

Yes, it reminds of the system restore thing in Windows. I will try to find out if there is something about this in the MX users manual over the weekend. I would like to use it myself.

I see there are updates for the Linux kernel and Firefox in my little update box, but like I mentioned earlier there is some issue with the latest update for MX Linux they need to resolve first. I will hold off for now.

I would like to know what Poorguy and the Wizard say about this matter, I am only the Tin Man.

These blokes are in another league and also in another time zone than I, one in the USA and the other down under. I am in the middle somewhere.

Always a wise idea to hold back until all issues are ironed out. I'm no expert with MX Linux as i only started using it from 18.2 it updated to 18.3 without issue. Speaking of Poorguy and the Wizard seem to be seasoned vets. Im in the UK. The time difference does my head in lol

Yes, I am in South Africa myself so we are just hours apart.

I have run into a bit of a predicament. In my MX Linux I have two updates available. One is for Firefox and the other one is for the Linux kernel 4.19.

Now I know I should hold back on the kernel update for now, but I have just read something about a zero-day vulnerability in Firefox that needs to be patched. I have used Ubuntu Linux for years and you can choose to uncheck updates you don't want to install in Ubuntu update, but I don't know how to do that in MX Linux.

I sometimes update my whole system with sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade in the terminal, but now I don't know how to update only Firefox.

Linux is really above my head but I would have yo buy a new PC to use Windows 10.

I don't do windows anymore, since 2014.

Any ideas Brolly?

I have completely ditched firefox for waterfox. I prefer waterfox to be honest. less bloat and calling home in my opinion. its been quite consistant for me. Not sure if its based on firefox esr. There must be a way of updating only one piece of software via the terminal. I tend to google search for solutions

I didn't know you could use Waterfox in Linux. How did you do that?

I just found out the security issue in Firefox is related to javascript so I will just switch to Chrome for now.

Sometimes the information you find in a Google search is very much outdated as far as Linux related stuff is concerned.
