Greetings fellow Linux enthusiasts. Very nice forum you have here :)
I am a long time Linux user but still consider myself a 'beginner'.
I started using Linux around 2005. Tried and failed a few times and/or was intimidated by Red Hat and Slackware .
Ubuntu was the first distro I was able to get installed and fully operational. Fell in love and never looked back.
I would generally run a dual-boot configuration with some version of Windows but for the past several years have been booting into Linux exclusively and rarely boot into Windows anymore. I will never, ever, never run Windows 10! Which is kind of a pity whereas it is a very good operating system. Unfortunately Microsoft felt the need to glom onto it with all their weirdo stuff. Oh well. I think with the end-of-life of Windows 7 coming up we will see an influx of new Linux users.

I live in a rural area and enjoy gardening, camping, and family. I have three grown kids, two grown grandsons, and two little granddaughters. I think I have succeeded in passing on some of my 'geek-fu' to my grandsons who are gamers. I try to keep up with the latest and greatest in gaming, often give them my best machines to play on, and sometimes build new gaming rigs for them. Haven't quite convinced them to come over to the 'dark side' (Linux) yet though!

I have perused very many Linux forums over the years and I must say what I see here on the Linux.org forums is very encouraging. Not all forums are 'beginner friendly'.

I have installed and tested out many, many Linux distros. I like 'em all. I distro hopped for a while and finally settled down on Linux Mint. I still keep a partition on my hard drive for installing and trying out random distros. My latest test was of EasyOS - Barry Kauler still keeping it interesting :) Before that I took Blue Collar Linux for a spin.

I'll try to pitch in whenever I can and learn along the way. Like this morning when I learned about 'IOMMU' from Wizards advice to a user. Thanks for that Wizard! It caused me to go look something up and learn from it.

Attached photo is of my granddaughter getting an introduction to #!CrunchBang Linux.

Welcome again. I'm sure that @wizardfromoz will be happy that he could help. By the way adding the "at" symbol to a login name in a posting(like I did above) is how you get the attention of that person on this site. He should appear in a puff of smoke shortly, to see who is using his "exalted" name in vain. We regularly jab each other in the ribs online, just for fun. He claims that wizards don't skulk, but ........:rolleyes:. Methinks he doth protest too much!
To answer your question on the last post, yes it is a ham call, from lovely Bermuda. My stateside call is WA1WJB. I have held that call for well over 40 years (original holder).

Happy Trails,
Paul

I figured as much - but I couldn't remember @wizardfromoz 's user name. Oops.
I'm curious - if VP9KS is your 'Bermuda' call sign and WA1WJB is your stateside call sign - is that why the VP9KS starts with a 'V' and not a 'W'?
I'm not really a 'ham' but have been interested in it since I was a wee lad. I have a ham radio my neighbor gave to me which I sometimes play with.

If you're going to quote Shakespeare Paul, I could see to it that you are hoist on your own petard :D

G'day Vrai and welcome.

Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi (regarding Barry Kauler) :p, for The Viewers, Barry, who lives outside Perth in Western Australia, is the creator of the Puppy series of Linux. He is supposed to be retired for the last 3 - 4 years but no-one seems to have told him that.

We have many many Members here aged from 60 - 75 or more, so I suspect you are in good company (I am 61).

That is a gorgeous shot of your granddaughter, perhaps she will be a Linux Developer of the future?

If you forget someone's user ID but know the first part, go to Search top right-hand side and click, type in Posted by eg "wizard" without the quotes, it will autocomplete.

You can call me Wizard, Wiz, Chris (I seem to recall that was my given name 5,000 years ago), anything but late for dinner.

Enjoy your Linux, and c u round

@Vrai
A very warm welcome to the forum .
That's a great introductory post BTW , you are going to fit in here just fine !

We have a similar history of hopping . I still use a ( small ) bunch of distros , with some in VMs
but Mint is my "daily drive" ( having some issues with it recently )

Did someone mention Puppy Linux , or was that in a different thread ?
I just love that one , if only for the entirely new lightweight take on the whole GNU/Linux concept .

I still have a version running on a ridiculously small USB stick .... just because I can !
I use it as a kind of "party piece " for when I come across fellow geeks who run massively bloated
Operating Systems ( eg. from Apple , and that other company ) :)

Best wishes

The quote on your posting, Is that yours, or what? :D:D

I doubt that I came up with it myself , but if I got it from elsewhere , I certainly don't have a clue
as to how or why or where ?
:)

Thanks for the warm welcome! :)
I used to enjoy Puppy Linux very much. I kind of lost interest after Barry K. stepped back from it. Now he is making EasyOS which is very interesting and "Puppy" like.

@wizardfromoz Thank you very much for the kind welcome.
Both you and 'peter_64' seem to have a wonderful sense of humor. Is that an Aussie thing? :)

Been teaching the 4 year old some keyboarding this morning. She catches on fast. Kids are so very clever.

Hope I can contribute enough here to cover my 'rent'.

If you spent all day standing upside down on the bottom of the world, you'd have to have a sense of humour.

That is the great part; no rent, no condo fee, no hoa fee, no mortgage, just friends and the straight skinny!:D:p

No worries, It is cool anyway!

If you hadn't mentioned it , I'd never have noticed that I'd written it incorrectly -
I'd missed out "it" before "ain't" .... Doh !
Cheers !
:)

Crikey, I've been reading that for some time, and missed it myself :(. I'm usually pretty pedantic about that stuff (read PITA).

Do you whiten your teeth, Paul?

Yeah .... me too ..... and I wrote it !!
.... spooky , eh ?

It's as if the human Brian had filled in the missing "it" subconsciously , while parsing the sentence .

I'm trying to think of any compilers that could do that ..... C for instance ? - :D

PS - Is it just me , or could we really use a chat room on this forum ?
